Someone suggested we catch the bus from Christchurch to lyttelton. Thought we were coming to a nice bay to catch lunch and a nice view.
It's a port town and they make it clear they don't want tourists.
Went to in to local cafe but sign on door was clear they weren't happy about tourism, so we saved our money, got back on bus to have lunch in Christchurch

We came to town with the goal to explore the many shops, learn about its history and have lunch. We accomplished all three PLUS met many nice, friendly and informative locals. From the store owners, librarian, to the members of the tourist shop and folks on the street we had a delightful time learning, sharing our stories and had a wonderful lunch. Visiting towns like Lyttleton is what makes travel a delight!

A place of contrasts. We arrived along the narrow and twisty coast road and left on a motorway through a modern tunnel.
It is a large working port but has some fine shops, bars and restaurants
i wish we had had longer to explore what seems to be a fascinating town.

Lyttelton is a 15-minute drive from Christchurch and is Christchurch's port/harbour - the place from where the Heroic Antarctic voyages of Shackleton, Scott etc. departed for ‘The Ice’ in the early part of the 20th century. There are some old buildings in town, some of which are pretty derelict, which is a shame. There was of course extensive damage to the town in the 2011 earthquake that also damaged Christchurch. There is still a lot going on at the port, with exports of timber going around the world. There is also a farmers market every Saturday in the main street. A little way out of town there are some lovely views across the harbour, islands and surrounding hills.

Small town with obvious alternative lifestyle. Very bohemian. Tiny eclectic coffee spots, niche stores and people. Visit on a sunny day and you will come away with a good feeling (even though you might not feel like you belong!).

Mostly an unwelcoming port town. There were a few signs around clearly stating that some businesses didn't want tourists in their town. We visited on our way back from lunch at Akaroa (gorgeous tourist bay town) to see the partially rebuilt Timeball Station. It was really interesting, even though a bit tricky to visit as there is no clearly marked parking. The views to and from the town are lovely, so maybe worth a quick stop for the Timeball Station, and coffee or food from a business (find one WITHOUT the signs.)

An interesting place o visit and driving over via the steep hills is worth the effort. Be careful tourists often not good on road usage.
Lots of quant shops to visit and go to but parking can be hard.

Our four nights in Lyttleton were fantastic with just the right activiity including the Gondola and the hike down on the Crater Rim Trai back to Lyttleton downtown. The dining at Fisherman's wharf, Nama sushi and the Indian restaurant were all excellent. Highly recommend.

We had an excellent lunch in Lyttelton, wandered around the quirky and interesting shops and visited the historic timeball tower that has been rebuilt and is very impressive. The lady in the tourist information office was very friendly and helpful. We would happily go back for another visit.

Is Lyttelton still very much damaged from the 2011 earth quake?
