KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger...

KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington.

KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

My husband and I were heading through to Palmerston North for a family birthday, we decided to take the trip in different style. Rather than fly to the Nth Island we chose to take the train were we could sit back enjoy the scenery have a relaxing drink, we also took the ferry over to Wellington. The train staff are... More

We loved this journey from Picton to Christchurch by rail after travelling from Wellington via the ferry that morning. We grabbed some rolls at the Subway store at the train station prior to jumping on board to keep the troops happy with something freshly made. We were lucky enough to be allocated to a set of four seats with a... More

We decided to do a long weekend trip. We would leave the car in Wellington, take the ferry to Picton, train from Picton to Christchurch, Tranz Alpine the next day and then fly back to Wellington to drive home. As you step off the ferry, the railway station is only a few hundred metres away. It is a beautiful old... More

We took the Interislander ferry and boarded the train after we landed at Picton. We travelled to Kaikoura where we met the coach again. The trip went through more parts of the countryside we would not have seen if we had done the journey fully by coach. There was some awe inspiring scenery and the entire trip was fun and... More

I didn't want to both with driving to Christchurch so after taking the InterIslander Ferry from Wellington, I connected with the train. It's an easy connection. They coordinate the times and it's barely a 5 minute walk from the ferry to the train. Very relaxing and scenic ride.

My husband and I did this trip last week and loved it. We got on the train at Picton and off at Christchurch. We have driven this route many times but never gone on the train so it was fun to go by train. The trip is lovely and the scenery varied. It starts in the little town of PIcton... More

After the Tranz-Alpine, this trip is a little anti-climatic but that is unfair to the trip. Some of the scenery is beautiful but much of it is farmland. I would suggest that if you are wanting to do this that you break it into 2 trips and stop off at Kaikoura. There is so much to see and definitely not... More

From check-in to disembarking this was a fabulous trip. Left rather early in the morning which meant a 5.30am start for us but it also meant we could then connect with the 2.15pm sailing of the Interislander back to Wellington. What a diverse range of scenery and countryside we went through in such a short space of time. City to... More
