There are heaps of lookout spots along the line of hills which ring Christchurch and look over the plains to the mountains. If you are stopping the car to check the view just be aware that the road can be narrow and curvy, with A LOT of cycle traffic, as well as vehicles. So just make sure that there is plenty of room to pull your car safely off the road as far as you can.
The views on a clear, bright day are truly breathtaking and never fail to delight. A very good safe place to do your viewing would be from Victoria Park, along the many walkways there. There is plenty of free, safe, off road parking and you can bring your dog.

The lookout is quick and easy to get to, and provides a panoramic view of the Canterbury Plains. It’s a great location to look out over the Southern Alps and the Pacific. Definitely check the weather beforehand! It can get quite busy if a tour group is there.

The "Hills" area is a great place to see good views of Christchurch and/or Lyttelton Harbour. Not just the hill top but at other stopping points. There are also walks to various viewing points.

Only worth going if you've got time to spare. It's a high point about Christchurch, and therefore offers views right across the city and the bay. There's a path there up through some coarse ground.

Cashmere Hill Lookout was the best way to view Christchurch City by daylight and sunset by night. We enjoyed our experience.

The Hills area is a great drive for scenic views of the city from several locations, a very pleasant drive. A must do for every tourist visiting Christchurch.

This is a local favourite as one drives over the Port Hills to the Bays on Banks Peninsula. Located at the top of the Port Hills it is a great place to park and get out of the car and view Christchurch city and Canterbury and the Southern Alps on a sunny day. Good and a must for tourists and campervans to tour the Bays and parks as well as view the surrounding area from a the best view point. There is a nice cafe too there for relaxing.

Beautiful views of the city and ocean, with snowy mountains in the distance. There were plenty of places to park, and lots of walks through the bush and hilltop with many viewpoints. A great location to really get a sense of Canterbury.
