A fascinating rocky bay with a line of beach houses. I was on the lookout for seals but didn’t see any. I walked through it to red rocks from island bay.

It’s a nice bay but would not recommend for swimmers. It has recently been rated the dirtiest beach in Wellington, and 1 in 10 people who swim there get sick. I think the swimming is alright personally as long as you are not swimming around the river mouth.

Bay has rocky beaches, it's not goog for swimmers. Instead you can go for a short walk to the Red Rocks point where you can observe the seal colony.

Owhiro Bay is located at the southern side of Wellington. It is a short drive away. The bay is very rocky and one can spot seals and birds over here. A short drive up the hill from this bay offers some spectacular views.

At the West end of Owhiro Bay is the Te Kopahou Reserve. The Reserve has a camping area and is great for walking and and good climbing and biking trails. You can also go 4 wheel driving. It is popular for scuba diving and snorkelling and there are tremendous views of the ocean. In July and August there will be about 400 basking seals in the area. Definitely an area to visit.

This is one of many bays on the south coast of the north island. You can drive here from Brooklyn. The bay is stony with large rocks and is often quite rough with big waves smashing the shore. Great views on a clear day and also interesting in a Southey to see the waves at their roughest.

Nice bay that can be quite rough at times. It has a beach bit and rocks and does tend to get a good blasting from the cook straits winds. Not warm in winter!!

Owhiro Bay is not a swimming beach. It is a great place to come to to watch the sea. Drive around towards Red Rocks and park at the Red Rocks car park and go for a walk. Fantastic spot to dolphin or whale watch. In the right season there are seals at Red Rocks - be warned - they smell and protect their young so dont go too close. A great outing on a sunny day - take the kids.

We have enjoyed walking our dog along the Owhiro Bay foreshore on many occasions. Just a short, enjoyable drive from the city. On a sunny, windless day it is a totally different experience form the exhilarating challenge of a blistering southerly gale. Both wonderful and worth the effort to get there.
One of my favourite places ...

Beautiful. We stayed here overnight in our motorhome at the freedom camping area next to the Te Kopahou Visitor Centre. The views were excellent and it is so close to Wellington. Very rocky black beach so we didn't swim, but it was just a very pleasant place to spend the night and next morning for breakfast. Kids enjoyed stack rock towers too. If you have 3hr to spare, hike west along the bay and you will find a seal colony, according to the signs there. Or just 4wd there.
