Description:

Space Place at Carter Observatory offers visitors a state of the art,...

Space Place at Carter Observatory offers visitors a state of the art, digital planetarium with an almost limitless range of virtual space journeys, along with multi-media exhibits that tell the Maori and European story of New Zealand's southern skies and the role of the stars in navigation. Space Place re-opened in March 2010 as a world class visitor attraction after a multi-million dollar refit. Over its 70 year history it has served as New Zealand's national observatory and this legacy is reflected in a collection of New Zealand astronomical history, including the oldest telescope of its kind operating in New Zealand. Space Place offers a fun learning experience for kids and visitors of all ages - we hope you'll have a blast! Open hours: During school holidays (public): Open: 10am daily, closing at 5.30pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday and at 11pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Space Place is closed on Christmas Day

A work event that included dinner, drinks and learning about the stars. Just a great evening and an amazing experience having the place to ourselves. Highly recommend.

Some of the exhibits and facilities feel a bit dated but overall it was a great experience for anyone with an interest in space and/or astronomy. The (paid) movie was very good, and I particularly enjoyed the free movie inside that talked about Maori astronomy/history/mythology. Worth a visit. There were some very excited kids when we were there... Try for... More

If you're visiting Wellington, you definitely have to come here. This observatory offers you the chance to look through an old telescope and watch a fantastic movie in a circular room: you'll be sitting on a comfortable chair and watch a movie played on the ceiling. The movie shows you the space, the stars, the planets and so on... Then... More

We visited Carters Observatory on a clear night to cap off some school work on Space for the children. We were hoping to view the night sky on the large telescope at the observatory and we were very lucky that the wind stayed down and the clouds kept away. We had a great time looking at the moon, jupiter, mars,... More

We paid only 12,50 for a very interesting show about astronomy. The exhibition is great - I was impressed with its quality of the paints and objects. It's well worth. Good to take your kids as well.

This is a great place to visit with the kids. Highly informative, with lots of interactive features for the children. We saw the dinosaurs show in the planetarium, followed by a short tour of the stars, which our 5 year old loved. We'll visit again for the night sky viewing when we can!

Come here on a rainy day - or any day and your kids will be occupied for ages. There is an awesome space related 'movie' to watch in the cinema and then the exhibitions are hands on and fun for all ages - could spend an hour in this part along easily. Totally recommend. Take the Cable Car up here... More

Attended the 7pm show. It was interesting mainly for the domed planetarium screen; quite a way to watch stuff - it was oddly low on information though, so don't expect too much. The planetarium itself is awesome though, full of all sorts of stuff, well worth a visit. The weather in Wellington changes very quickly - we had clear skies... More

This is a great place for kids and adults alike. Lot's of things to look at and explore. I really enjoyed the planetarium, and the show I saw was very well done, and the guide was very informative.
