I came out onto Houghton bay following my walk from Wellington CBD. It's a breezy spot with red rocks in the foreground. You can walk easily along the pedestrian footpath adjacent to the esplanade towards Island Bay. There are interesting houses to look at along the way too. Also a snorkelling spot.

“A rocky beach”

Nice if you like to explore rock pools etc but its not a sandy beach. Good path to walk the bays though. Great views back towards Cape Palliser and Welly harbour entrance.

Breezy walk with unique abodes with residential monorail, the Keep n Lighthouse Hotel

On this lovely summer's day, we strolled along the bay walkway taking in the sea breeze. Apart from the ocean waves breaking on the rocks of this southerly exposed coast and the occasional traffic passing by, several unusual buildings caught our attention. A lady in a private monorail cable car travelling at an incline up to the circular house on the cliff face (see attached photo). The Keep, a grey stone narrow tower is a boutique lodging along with the Lighthouse hotel which is just round the corner on Island Bay.

A nice spot

Beautiful views of the sea coast

There is a very easy and safe walking path around Houghton Bay which provides excellent views of the sea coast. The beach is sandy and also safe and very nice for walking on. A great place for a relaxing walk.

Great Place to picnic, walk or stay the night...

Feb 2016

Great place for Freedom Campers (certified and non-certified) to stay a night or two, for easy access to Wellington and Cook Strait Ferries. Showers and toilets at site. Great views. NOT suitable in gale-force weather, due to proximity of sea.
