The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car....

The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car. In just 5 minutes you will reach the top of the Botanic Garden where panoramic views of the city and harbour are the reward. You can also visit the Space Place Observatory here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum (free entry), which provides a history of the city's symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display. There are walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

Enjoyed the ride on the tram. Easy to find as there is a red tram above a sign in Lambton Quay near David Jones. You can either buy a return or walk up to the top and pay on exit at the bottom.

Great ride and view of Wellington, and interesting (free) museum at the top. The coloured lights in the tunnel are an added attraction, though not executed as well as Shanghai's river tunnel. The cable car (a funicular) runs every 10 minutes. Get there early (>9:30am) to avoid the queues, especially if a cruise ship is in dock.

It was shorter than I thought it would be but saved a lot of walking. There is a kind of fun light show in one of the tunnels. Bear in mind that if you are going up planning to go to Zealandia, you can get a shuttle from Zealandia back to the city so you may only need a one... More

Cheap and worth the ride. Doesn't take long and they are frequent. We held back for the next train so we could take at the front to take photos whilst we went up. I'd suggest doing this or even if you want to wait for a seat. There are amazing rainbow lights in the tunnels which make for beautiful photos... More

Even though the day we visited Wellington was wet & windy, it was fun travelling up the short trip in the cable car! Cost was around $15NZ for 2 adults return. Up the top there are a number of walks to do through the Botanic Gardens, have a coffee in the (very busy) cafe, take photos of the harbour below... More

For $7.50 you get a return trip up a steep mountain that I'd hate to walk up. Cable car itself is beautiful. Trip is very short and as much of a mode of transport as a tourist attraction. If I had more time I would have walked down through the botannical gardens.

Short ride in a neat cable train up to the botanical gardens. Love the tunnel with the rainbow rings of led lights. Adds a certain awesomeness to a dull tunnel. There are a few stops along the way and some glimpses of a view of the city. We stayed at the James Cook Grand Chancellor hotel so easy access to... More

Love the cable car ride. It's cheap the driver advises you were to go when you get to the top. The view over wellington is good and the view from the top is great. You can visit the planatorum or go to a cafe at the top
