The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car....

The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car. In just 5 minutes you will reach the top of the Botanic Garden where panoramic views of the city and harbour are the reward. You can also visit the Space Place Observatory here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum (free entry), which provides a history of the city's symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display. There are walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

A great feature of this historic city, from the centre of the city the fabulous fresh clean cable cars take up to the higher levels to a fabulous outlokk, superb gards, a great observatory and cafe, and access to Zealandia. Do it, with all the family or on your own or as a couple. Its fabulous.

This is iconic wellington. It is no longer the sit outside and swing your feet above the rails of yesteryear, but it is still one of the wellington must do things. Catch from lampton quay and head up admiring the view. Once at the top enjoy the gardens and meander to kelburn for lunch

Took friends up for a ride, as haven't been for a few years.. Excellent ride for only $7.50 return. I went at night, and was amazed at the coloured light show put on inside the tunnels. Although the café at the top is closed after dark, go up early evening over summer just to experience the light show..

Get your postcard picture of the Cable Car and enjoy travelling like so many locals and tourists do every day. From the City centre to the Botanical Gardens. This is a short but pleasurable trip and the views from the top of Wellington make you smile. From the top you have the Botanical Gardens, the museum as well as the... More

We enjoyed using the cable car, while it is a quick trip it is also affordable and takes you to the Wellington botanic gardens where you can walk the trail back into the city which is what we did. Views were beautiful, for $4 it's a must do really.

Whenever in Welly, even if only for a day or two, I always have a cable car ride. What a treat. A delightful old fashioned ride up the mountain to superb views of the city and surrounds, then a very pleasant easy stroll down through the immaculate and interesting botanical gardens (be sure to visit the rose garden abd have... Thank you for the lovely recommendations - the Botanic Garden, especially the Lady Norwood Rose Garden area is a must! This is the perfect time to visit as it is at full bloom. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the Cable Car ride and walk back down, we would recommend others to do so when Wellington's puts on a nice... More

Take ride up to the top and see much of Wellington. It only takes 7 minutes or so and is used by commuters everyday; this isn't a touristy thing. But tourists are welcome. While at the top, visit their nice museum and park grounds, where you can walk back down into the downtown. (Was raining the day we were there,... More

Hi there, yes the Cable Car ride only takes about 5 minutes each way and is used daily by our local residents and student to commute to work. This give you a chance to experience travel just a local! And as you've mentioned there's the option to take the Cable Car back down if it starts to rain but we... More
