About
Wellington Zoo is New Zealand’s first Zoo, and Wellington’s oldest conservation organisation, caring for animals since 1906. The Zoo is a not for profit charitable trust and we're proud to be the world’s first carboNZero certified zoo. We are guided by our kaupapa Me Tiaki, Kia Ora! We must look after our environment, so all things will flourish. It is up to us collectively to make a difference for animals and the wild places they call home. See our website for entry prices and to plan your visit. If you have accessibility needs, you can find more visitor information on our website.

    Great zoo
The zoo had many upgrades since last visit a few years ago. It was raining and cold but there are lots of covered areas and lots of animals were still out and about. Highlight was the new snow leopard. The top can be a bit steep to walk for some.

    Worth a visit
A wonderfully laid out space with many good sized enclosures for the animals. Walk through the aviary to see kea up close; step into the dark twilight space and find the kiwi browsing around looking for insects. We went on a sunn, crisp winter day and nearly all the animals were enjoying the sun too. Cleverly placed playgrounds and sculptures will allow children recreation while parents can sit down. The cafe’s far wall abuts the Pygmy marmoset monkeys’ enclosure; sit and sip your coffee while watching these engaging, curious and lively monkeys.

Visit for the kiwi and kea
We went here to see a kea up close. There are 4 kea in the enclosure and I was very excited when one walked right near my shoe. The other 3 were very sleepy. Sadly I saw some groups of visitors walk right through the enclosure without even looking around for them. We also visited the kiwi exhibit where we saw a couple of kiwi towards the back of their habitat. We just went for these two birds but there are plenty of other animals here for zoo lovers.

    Best zoo experience ever
A great day out with our 14 year old grandson. We decided to attend all the scheduled animal talks, which was an excellent way to navigate the zoo. All the rangers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable and kept us really interested. We were lucky to see up close nearly all of the animals. A special mention to a volunteer James who spent the day looking out for us and proved to be a great spotter. He really helped us to make the most of our day and is a great ambassador for Wellington Zoo.

    Wellington Zoo a must Doo
Gone are the days of dropping half a tab of acid and jumping the Zebra enclosure at 2am in the morning, for a visit, you would be better buying a ticket and having a laugh with the front counter staff, and they give you a map. The Otters snuggled together in the afternoon summed up my experience, as did the Chimpanzees and the Sun Bear, who was too lazy to swat a fly of its back. Everything was laid back. Well, it was not a public holiday, or school holiday for that matter. The staff were friendly, and the other customers were chatty. There were of course the grumpy grannies looking for faults in the Zoo, that were lurking around, that were easily brushed aside. I enjoyed the Black and White Ruffed Lemar's, who feasted on fruits and nuts. The Snow Leopard was invisible, and the Lion just had an operation, so was recovering. I thought the little blue penguins were a myth, to slow down drivers, but they are real! I was surprised to find myself watching a group of Kangaroos relaxing in front of me, without a fence, or barrier. The Giraffe was hungry and was pacing around. There is so much to do. I would like to return and book an up close and personal experience with a Capybara.

Paid a visit to the Wellington zoo. Unfortunately the day was very windy and after an hour at the zoo the rain came down. There were not very many people about and most of the animals seemed to be sheltering from the weather. There have been lots of changes to the zoo since I was last there and great to see a lot of larger enclosures now.

Will have to make a fine day visit on another trip to Wellington.

Have visited many zoo's in various city's and countries and would have to say this was so disappointing! Very few animals and what they did have was often out of view or very obscured. Their habitats seemed very uninteresting or stimulating for the poor animals that we could find. At $27 per person it was not money well spent at all. Also to be noted for anyone with any mobility issues this is a nightmare as everything you went to look at was a hike uphill, I think there should be some sort of signage at the entrance to warn people.

Honestly found this experience underwhelming ... very difficult to see many animals at all (it was a fine day)

Zoo Very spread out and would advise NOT for anyone with mobility issues!! It’s all up and down / steep. Pram was a challenge, wheelchair or someone lack of mobility would really struggle. (Should be advised in promotional material)

Good theory with the kiwi “tunnels” but it was SO dark that people were literally bumping into each other.

Parking was difficult/ very scarce. (Saturday morning) for a facility of this size one would expect better parking.

Lastly but not at all least ... some
Of the animals looked lonely and miserable.

Not cheap entry fees ...so probably could do
Better for your money.

Had a fantastic day out at Wellington Zoo. Not ideal that there is no car park, but understandable, being that it is so close to the city centre. We were able to park for free a few minutes from the zoo. Entry cost was very reasonable as was the rest of the park (cafe/gift shop/encounters). We arrived on opening and left when they closed, attending all of the talks, which we found to be very informative, and the rangers around the park were knowledgable, friendly and approachable. Today we had the pleasure of Isabelle and Kerri-Anne for the majority of the talks. They contributed to the experience and made it more enjoyable, as they clearly loved their jobs. I did the Lemur encounter whilst there, which was well worth the money. The park was well maintained and clean, the enclosures were well kept and full of enrichment for the animals, they all seemed very well looked after. Would recommend Wellington Zoo as a day out!

We had an amazing meerkat encounter! So much fun with meerkats running all over us, playing with our shoes and allowing us to be part of their enrichment/treat time. So awesome to get up close and hear all the little noises they use to communicate to each other.
Our keeper Jacob was really knowledgeable and interesting and tried to answer all our questions. My daughter and I took note of the advice on entering the zoo to “impersonate gnomes” and be still and quiet and we definitely got lots of contact from the meerkats. They are so curious, funny, cheeky and real characters.
Definitely recommend this for any animal lover wanting a beginner level experience.
PS wear clothes/shoes that you don’t mind the meerkats having a wee chew of 😄

The zoo was small but nice. It was enjoyable seeing the animals and learning about them.

The highlight of this zoo that stood out was you're able to watch the vets at The Nest work on animals. When I was there, there was a Kaka that they got the day before and they were supposed to give it a health check. That turned out to be a treatment for its injured feet after.

This is a very real procedure that members of the public can see behind glass windows so you will not know for sure how long the procedure will take. It is however, an amazing opportunity for people to see vets at work and the amazing things that they do.

The team also will talk and explain what they are doing and you're welcome to ask questions.

I stayed the entire duration of the procedure. Roughly 2 hours from start till finish so take note if you have other things you want to do at the zoo.

Family and I thoroughly enjoyed this zoo, they have a schedule talk time which gave us more insight into the animals. There are a couple of playgrounds throughout the zoo so the kids will enjoy themselves. A must see attraction if you are in Wellington.

I was booked on the Red Panda Close Encounter and loved it!
The red pandas walked across our laps as it ate from our hands.
The zoo guide was very friendly and told us stories about the red pandas.

Definitely a cool experience and thing to do, just be sure to book in advance for the red panda!

We also loved the Chimpanzees and Giraffes.

The zoo was quite good with a wide variety of animals (though I do feel sorry for them as the space is quite small). However, the parking was atrocious. There was an event on in the park next door and we really struggled to find a park

Absolutely love the zoo . Such a shame it's so small. Staff are always amazing.

If you're unfamiliar with Wellington, the zoo can be a struggle for some as the path is a bit of a steep climb but if you stop at every enclosure to look at things you'll soon get your breath back. I wish the zoo here was larger like orana park and Auckland zoo, spread out over 2.8kms.

I love animals and love zoo's so I love the place even if small and visit at least 2 or 3 times a year.
