About
We offer a range of ways for people to visit Parliament. You are welcome to take part in one of our free guided tours, take a map to self-guide around our grounds, or watch the debating chamber in action in the public galleries. On our tours you will explore the Parliament buildings, learn about the Parliamentary process in New Zealand, and find out how you can participate in our democracy. Along the way, you will see some of the many artworks and objects from the Parliamentary Collection, and get to know the details behind the iconic architecture. Tours are free, and operate throughout each day, seven days per week. We recommend booking all of our tours in advance, as numbers are strictly limited and we cannot guarantee you a space on a tour if you do not have a booking. Tour times and availability are on the Guided Tours page of our website, along with links to book, and more information about what to expect from your visit.

- b_long176Sydney, Australia1,179 contributionsThis review was just a quick visit to the exterior of the buildings, in particular the "Beehive". As an architect it was interesting to see such a different formed building, next door to the traditional parliament building typology. The precinct around it included a nice park and the cenotaph, and there is a playground for the kids as well. Worth a visit, just to walk around. We may try an inside tour next time we visit.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 16, 2024
- TWal1Canberra, Australia2,917 contributionsWalking around the Parliament Buildings is very pleasant in the early morning light when there are only a few people around. The buildings are impressive and there are other pieces related to Māori and colonial culture close by. Access to the area is relatively free.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten April 1, 2024
- SchnetziiiFrench Polynesia38 contributionsFeel free to enter the building, the visitor center is behind the security checks. If you have not booked in advance, ask for the next availability to register. Don't forget to ask for your audio guide to enjoy a visit with all the explanations. Let yourself be carried by the guide who will take you to the different rooms of the buildings. The visit is definitely worth a visit.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 26, 2024
- Erik TZwolle, The Netherlands135 contributionsMake sure you order your free tickets online on time! We were not successful and we went there anyway in the hope that there would be cancellations. Inside you can find some information and a small shop. Unfortunately no cancellations, but in exceptional cases we were still allowed to take a look inside the parliament chamber. Very lucky! The real tour should be a lot of fun considering our short experience. So book on time!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 31, 2024
- zg6451 contributionsTook 1 hour guided tour of parliament. It is free but you need to schedule in advance. I signed up in the am for a pm tour. Guide did a nice job of talking the group through the complex, explaining and providing time to take pictures. Only about 20 people are allowed at a time. Be prepared to check in your purse, backpack and any other bags, as well as hats. You can carry your cell.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 20, 2024

I took the library museum self guided tour. It was brilliant. You can read everything in 30 minutes and it was so informative with some beautiful artworks and old pieces of history. I did not know Prince Edward came here in the 1930's before he was crowned King - and I did not know NZ girls could legally be married at the age of 12 before the 1930's! Worth a visit. And if the cafe is open to the public - good reasonable pricing for food.

We don't have kids, however, there were kids on our tour, and the guide was quite attentive to make the tour fun for them. We quite a bit and learned a lot (we are from the US). The building is gorgeous and stately, and you get to see, and enter, the press room, the unicameral debate chamber, one of the public committee rooms for citizen input, etc. Interesting and family-friendly.

Booked on line for the free tour. Our guide Kim was excellent. Her explanations of the NZ electoral system were impressive, clear and concise. Given it was a Sunday we were able to visit everywhere in the beehive and the parliament building. The architecture of both is impressive.
Would highly recommend including a tour on your Wellington itinerary

Highly recommend this tour if you visit Wellington. Took our 2 young kids (7 & 10 year old) who throughly enjoyed it.
Rob our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond including playing and singing happy birthday to our son.
Enjoyed visiting all of the key rooms including the debating room, the press room where they hold the daily covid press conferences and the great hall.
We weren’t expecting to enjoy it as much as we did with my partner saying it had been a real highlight.
No photos are allowed to be taken during the tour but we quite liked that.
Definitely a must do in Wellington!

We had a fantastic tour around the Parliament building today led by Janet, a knowledgeable and welcoming guide. We learnt not only about the buildings but also about the processes in parliament - very interesting. Old parliament building is beautiful and it was fascinating to hear about the renovations that make the building more prepared to withstand earthquakes.

A spontaneous visit as we walked home after a long day.
I haven't been into Parliament Buildings for over 45 years when my father used to work there.
We did the free 30 minute tour with Kim, who took us a few more places and went a bit longer - we were lucky numbers were light. She is very knowledgeable and taught us some fascinating facts, even though we thought we knew quite a lot already.
It was quite emotional going into the Debating Chamber having only seen in on TV before. I would thoroughly recommend this tour for all New Zealanders - possibly one of the most significant things I have done as an adult.

It would be difficult to miss the parliament buildings as they are located in the city centre and the main one, the ‘Beehive’ is so distinctive. There are a number of interesting statues around the buildings. I didn’t bother with the tour due to time restraints.

A fascinating and free 1-hour tour of NZ’s parliament buildings; well worth doing. Our informative and keen to be helpful (if a little amusingly robotic) tour guide kept us moving through the Beehive, debating chamber, Parliament House and then the gothic style parliamentary library before a quick peek at the base isolation structures under the buildings to protect them from earthquakes. We found the debating chamber and media zones particularly interesting, and were glad we did the tour. Of course we’d have loved to have seen more of the beehive (cabinet rooms and offices etc) but did understand why that’s not on the tour. Definitely worth doing though.

A highly informative, interesting (free) tour, given by the confident and assured Sarah, who took us on an hour’s trip of the three main building in the Parliamentary estate. It was great that we were able to enter the chamber and select committee rooms.
Only downside was the crazy rule that we had to leave our phones behind (and cameras) for “security” reasons despite having been airport style screened – that doesn’t happen in the US capitol or the UK Parliament, or on airlines and this Parliament prides itself on transparency.
No points for such over zealous security.

We came to NZ partly because we admired how the Prime Minister and the government handled the recent crises, including the Christchurch mosque shootings and the pandemic. We did a tour and learned quite a bit. While this is the land of Lorde and Lord of the Rings, there is apparently no House of Lords, or Senate as we'd call it in the US.
We were able to watch Parliament in session, though only a few members were present. On the day we visited, Question Time would take place that afternoon. Had we stayed for it, we might have seen the Prime Minister, but alas we had orcs to visit.

Yep there are quite a few on the side street but during the day it’s likely to be full. You can park at the Westpac stadium not far away. We went at night it looks quite pretty with the lighting and all the parks on the side street were free.
