ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence...more

Zealandia encompasses a VERY large area, and if we could, we would like to have covered the off beaten tracks where we saw some fantails and some green parrots singing calls we had not heard prior. Even though we were there from 12 to 5pm,...More
Wow, this place was amazing. My family and I took the 2 hour tour during the day, so glad we did. Our tour guide Chris was fantastic, he explained what the park does, what is involved in keeping predators out and just general information on...More
I visited Zealandia during the Christmas holidays with a local kiwi friend who was very passionate about nature and wildlife so I got a wealth of knowledge from her. Zealandia itself is so large, you forget that you are just outside of Wellington! It is...More
Took our friends who were visiting from UK for the Zealandia by day guided tour. Our guide was a lovely guy called Paul. Paul was very knowledgeable about the sanctuary and the wildlife there. My friend is an avid bird watcher and Paul spent a...More
Was recommended to visit by a local. This rates alongside the Te papa museum as a top attraction. There is a free shuttle bus from the top of the cable car. Was also recommend to pay the extra for the guided tour. Definitely learn and...More
Great p’ace To go if you want o escape the city but don’t have time to stray far from Wellington. Can see lots of nature and what NZ had to offer. If you’re doing a lot of hiking, this may not be for you as...More
I came here as part of an excursion and we only had a small amount of time so we only got to walk about 3/4 mile of the 8 - 10 miles in the sanctuary. This is really well done with loads of indigenous plantlife....More

Absolutely go there if raining. We are locals and we time our visits for rain - partly to avoid other people! Seriously, the birds are more likely to be out n about if less people. Just dress for the conditions. My other local tips are a) see the kaka feeding and b) go up deeper into the Sanctuary if time allows. The further you go in, the better it gets😁
This is our 15 - 20 day Itinerary/ wishlist in Australia. Can you please point out any choices that may be a waste of time/ over-hyped and also any additions or activities that we have missed but is a must see/ do? Also any suggestions for tours/ packages in any of these places would be most welcome. Any suggestions including those not within our current path would be great. The trip will be in the third week of April. Queenstown -Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound -Skyline Gondola ...More

Okay, you know you are going to get teased for saying this is your wishlist for Australia and yet all your destinations are in New Zealand. So, barring that, I will say that none is a "waste of time", but it will depend on where/how you want to spend time/money. The only thing on your list which I think is overhyped (although I've never done it) is the TransAlpine. It goes through miles of tunnels, and really, how scenic can that be? We went to Rotorua for a couple of days and never...More
Tiritiri Matangi similarity to Zealandia (2 Replies)
Hi, I'm deciding whether to daytrip to Tiritiri Matangi or Rangitoto. I'll be spending some time in Wellington before heading to Auckland and while in Wellington I'll go to the Zealandia sanctuary. Anyone know how similar Tiritiri Matangi is to Zealandia?

Hi Mark, In my experience, Tiri is much more interesting than Zealandia. Because it is an offshore island, the birdlife is much more diverse. Zealandia has a pest proof fence. It has tuatara, and when I visited we saw one sunning itself which was really great. As far as I am aware, there are no tuatara in Tiri (however this may have changed) Both sanctuaries have different bird species but I think you are more likely to see a wider range of birds at Tiritiri Matangi. Rangitoto is...More
