ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

Had a great morning learning about New Zealand native animals, and flora, was great to see the hard work being done to restore the land back to the way it was. It was really interesting, highly recommended.

We are foundation members of Zealandia. We take all of our visitors to there, and I don't think anyone we have taken has been disappointed. Unless the visitors are physically limited, or we are time constrained we tend to do the track around the upper lake as you are more likely to run across saddlebacks and riflemen, and the track... Fantastic place to take the Grandchildren. Plenty to see and keep them interested. Lovely walks. Great food and on course ice creams at the end of your visit.

This valley totally exceeded my expectations. Well managed, beautifully looked after. Miles of track to walk and an excellent cafe to unwind in after.

A step back in time with nature as it should be. They're doing amazing things here bringing back NZ animals and plants, a very interesting and relaxing afternoon strolling amongst some very fine scenery.

Try to get there early morning so that you can hear the birds and see the Takehe rare birds being fed. By all means, take one of the volunteer ranger tours for 45 minutes so you see all the possible birds and other sights. This is a sanctuary just over the hill from the main city of Wellington which is... More

This is really for the bird lovers. If getting to see some of NZ's rarest birds is your thing then Zealandia is a must visit. You will see birds here that you won't find anywhere else in the country (at least not easily). If you want to visit it properly make sure you set aside at least half a day.... More

Great sanctuary with so many beautiful native birds flying around. Kaka, tui and Kereru everywhere!! Amazing to see saddleback!! Great fun spotting takehe and tuatara too! You can just go for a short stroll, or can spend several hours exploring the different tracks. Definately recommend it if you are visiting Wellington and interested in NZ native plants and birds!!!

A wonderful experience if you're staying in Wellington and most likely the only place where visitors will have the opportunity to see Takahe (endangered NZ bird). A gorgeous place to walk amongst bush and perhaps glimpse some rare NZ birds, along with the more common cheeky Kaka! Great for families with an excellent on-site cafe/restaurant and facilities to bring your... More

I consider this one of the more interesting and well run Healthy Options for a visit to Wellington. You combine a lovely set of walks with a world of information to absorb. We were lucky as a multitude of Tuatara were out sunning themselves when we visited. Another pleasant feature was that the venue had an on site café, which... More
