ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

What a pleasure to visit this sanctuary. Theres a great range of walks, depending on how much time you have available, and to suit various abilities. The highlight was the bird feeding stations - we could have watched them for ages. If its summer, take a picnic and spend a while to truly enjoy the experience. It was just wonderful... More

The stunning location that this is set in makes you realise how lucky Wellington is to have preserved this area originally. The exhibit both inside and out is educational, fun and well set out. The facilities are good and clean and the atmosphere there is one which is ideal for all, especially families with kids.

I was a little bit disappointed after visiting Zealandia. Had a nice walk, but expected more wildlife. Since the kiwi is in their logo I expected to see at least one, but no. Expect a kind of zoo with not many animals when you go here.

With 32kms of track there is no way to get bored here. If you have a family of 4 or 5 & plan on going more than once in a year, it's smarter to get an annual pass, the second time you go, you're saving money. My 12yr old girl & 9yr old boy love this place, they both like... More

We arrived less than an hour before closing time so had to walk the loop of the park as a brisk pace but we still managed to see lots of native birds and identify some of them thanks to the back of the map. Would have been good to have more species on there though so that I know what... More

As a New Zealander I'm ashamed to say I have never before seen some of the native birds that fly free at Zealandia. So it was a treat to get up close to Takahe, Saddleback, Kaka. We had the most amazing encounter with a Kaka which flew down from the tree tops to give us a wonderful sight of it... More

Take you time going through the museum inside to see some history, and listen the beautiful voice of a native women. Then spend time listen to the most beautiful birds in the world.

Zealandia lived up to its reputation. A sanctuary near the heart of the city. Easily accessible via shuttle from the centre of town. A wide variety of birdlife on show. Some more reclusive than others. The highlight for me was my first sight of a takehe. The walking tracks were varied in difficulty but most areas were suitable for the... More

Look, even if you don't see many animals it's all about the Takahe. As long as you see them (Puffin, and I've forgotten the male one's name) it will be worth it. I took my Australian boyfriend there and he enjoyed the walks through the bush, but he was amused that one of the things you could look out for... More

Zealandia is a great initiative - to preserve New Zealands natural environment by fencing out any introduced species. It's definitely a nice park to go for an afternoon walk in but it's also not a zoo. With speakers hung up in trees to imitate native bird sounds and posters of birds hung up in the branches I couldn't help but... More
