ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

You will need a good few hours to walk round this but it's well worth it. Walk up to the reservoir and make sure to take a camera. Fabulous views and lots of wildlife. A good pair of shoes is a must as there are not too many places to sit. The cafe us superb with lots of healthy variety.... More

I have visited four times between February & July of 2016. The first time I took my Japanese student, we loved it so much we went back again the following day. The next visit there were four of us and we spent half a day looking around. I returned again with a large group and a picnic lunch but unfortunately... More

A free shuttle will take you from the downtown info center to Zealandia, where they have fenced off a whole valley, removing the invasive species and giving introduced rare wildlife a place to recover. There is an excellent museum, tailored toward kids, that gives a good overview of the creatures of NZ , past and present. Take a free tour... More

Lovely bush and the bird life is excellent! It does feel like the entry is quite expensive, but when you wander round the sanctuary, the cost of maintenance involved must be extraordinary! Been there in the wet and in the dry and was great both times

We planned a day at the Sanctuary and it was totally worth it. A walk in the woods, and you give yourself time to observe the bird calls. They also have exhibitors of the bird sounds, fascinating. We also got a chance to have small guide tours. Zealandia is absolutely worth it, if you want peace, calm and serenity in... More

Beautiful setting and walk and lots of bird sounds but very few birds spotted so it was a bit disappointing for the price . I still rated it 4 star as its values and reason for being hold true and I think it's an important project to support. Totally in awe of the planting and the scale of the project... More

I did the night tour and organised it at the tourist information office in town. I did not ask, but presumed that the $79 I paid included the entrance fee. Well it didn't and I had to pay another almost $20 for just over an hour. (I had arrived at 4pm and the tour started at 515pm). I really think... More

Zealandia is natural treasure close to the heart of Wellington. A walk there is restorative, nourishing and enlivening. The bush simply crackles with bird life and one can feel transported back into the days when possums and other pests didn't reign supreme in the great outdoors of NZ. A visit there may not be as cheap as other outdoor activities... More

We had an incredible time at Zealandia - Wayne our tour guide was so very knowledgable, and it was an absolute pleasure to have him lead us around this beautiful sanctuary. Even though the weather was drizzly and miserable, his passion for the wildlife and environment was effervescent, and we had such a enjoyable experience. I have already recommended the... More

Beautifully presented fauna and flora of New Zealand. A wonderful opportunity for a peaceful walk and learn something at the same time. Loved it
