About
Hashigo Zake is New Zealand's most single minded beer outlet - defiantly excluding the bland, the boring and the industrial and only serving beer, wine, sake and whisky that our staff and regular customers get excited about. If any of that is a problem, Wellington has plenty of other outlets willing to take your money. But if you want an ever-rotating range of great drinks, brutally frank advice from knowledgeable staff, free wifi and a warm, welcoming environment, step out of the chaos above ground into our basement bar.

In a litle side alley this ios an out of the way bar, worth finding. The music is excellent, the staff super friendly and a descent range of craft beers. The bar snacks are good we had a very tasty Lamb and Spinach pie. Well worth finding.

Me and my bf who comes from England came to this bar for a beer. We noticed that the guy behind the bar was English so we wanted to make nice chat with him - he was very off isch after hearing English customers. After us was another couple asking about his nationality- they were kiwi. He got upset again. He needs more sense of humour this guy!! Me as a foreign get this question on daily basis - it does not bother me. So don't get upset mate if people want to be friendly and make some conversation with you!

Thank you for your comments. We expect our staff to be knowledgeable, patient, hard-working and always pleasant and courteous with customers, even those who are difficult or intoxicated. If one of them didn't meet that expectation then I apologise. On the other hand, the nationality of our staff members is their own business and they have a right to keep it separate from their work.

A quick sneaky drink on the way home from work with a mate. Great changing range of beer and we tried a whiskey to finish that off.

This place was always super inviting with a great selection of beers. This time was super quiet with the toilets smelling better than the bar. I felt the mask posters and covid protocol was a little over the top in the current environment

A group of mates eager to experience small breweries in Wellington CBD were disappointed with this establishment. Expensive, indifferent service- charisma bypass. We found better options elsewhere!

I visited the bar by myself waiting for a friend to finish work. I thought it was odd that they don't have barstools at the bar as lots of solos like the opportunity to sit at the bar and have a chat with staff about the beers etc. I figured out why they don't have barstools, because the staff could care less if you're there. They spent their time on iPads or laptops and very little with customers. Another guy came in and started to ask about different beers and the staff member pretty much told him if he didn't know the difference then it wouldn't matter what he was served. I thought that was downright rude. Anyway, I wouldnt/haven't/won't go back and have told numerous people that there are plenty of great bars in Wellington where the staff are inviting and appreciate a chat.

There is a huge craft beer culture in New Zealand and in Wellington there is a stylish bar that showcases some of the best craft beers from New Zealand. Hashigo Zake is the place to go to try out new and interesting brews, as well as home grown craft beers there are also imports from Australia and Japan as well as other countries. The bar is in a basement that used to house police cells and with a japanese theme gives it quite a quirky feel.

We stopped in for a light dinner on the recommendation of a Wellingtonian we'd met. We weren't disappointed. Off an alley and down a flight of stairs is a cozy, sort-of-Japanese space with a very impressive list of craft and cult beers, dumplings and small entrees. The night we were there featured a tap "takeover" by two Danish and German craft breweries, along with a sizable list of NZ and international craft beers. Very enjoyable stop.

Attractive underground location. Numerous beers on tap and many more in bottles and cans. Clean and bright with ample seating and tables. Live bands some nights. Downtown location is convenient to hotels, restaurants and other bars.

Came down the stairs and thought "WOW" looks amazing - but was let down by slow unhelpful, and rude staff - over priced as well!
