Beautiful ferry trip to the Island from Queens Wharf - and very informative briefing of the island's history and current status. Gorgeous easy walks - clearly with amazing views. Stay for two hours or several. There's accommodation too. We spent a few fab hours there and so pleased to have done so.

This is a great day trip from Wellington. Nice, easy trails and good views back over the harbor to the city. You can also see Wetas here.

Loved it here, so close to the city yet so peaceful. About 20 minutes on the East by West ferry, which leave from the wharf, just a couple of minutes walk from Lambton Quay. We took a small picnic and left on the midday ferry, returning at 3.10 which gave plenty of time to explore the island and enjoy a... More

We chose a glorious calm and sunny day in these school holidays to catch the East West ferry just to visit the island. 24.OO for adults return and i think 11 .00 for children. The ferry ride was smooth and views fantastic. This was my first visit with young grandchildren ages 7.5 and 5 yrs old. The walk is too... More

I camped here several times. Loads of wildlife, camping or hire a DOC house, you will see little blue penguins at night, perhaps a tuatara, and some giant wetas cruising in the clover. In the day there are heaps of geckos, and birds. You are woken at dawn with heaps of birds, and it is a way of being away... More

I love Somes Island because it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere and yet you can see the city of Wellington and even hear the noises of the city, It is a unique experience. Full of history, the island and its regenerating bush, is well worth a visit. Nice ferry ride to get there too.

This year 2016 was the first time I ever had the chance to visit Matiu/Somes Island. It was simply THE MOST PEACEFUL place I have ever been in Wellington. With a 360 degree view of the harbour and beautiful walkways all the way around. It costs to ferry to the island but there is no fee while you are there.... More

Took the 10:00 ferry there and stayed until the 12:50 ferry to return to the city, which allowed good length of time to walk leisurely all around the island. Short pleasant ferry ride for $23 round trip. Great views from the ferry and from the island. Easy walking on well maintained paths. Very interesting history. Very pleasant environment. Very peaceful... More

Just a short ferry ride from the harbor. Bring your own drinks and snacks, nothing sold on island. Get back to nature and relax. Great with young children. Well planned out trails.
