We spent a good three hours here but that wasn't enough to explore all that the island had to offer. Being a scientific reserve, you have to ensure that you were animal/pest-free before exploring, but otherwise, the entire island is yours to explore. There's a...More

Mr 52 and I caught the ferry from Queen's Wharf over to Matiu / Somes Island on a beautiful, calm, sunny Wellington day. It cost me $23. Mr 52 went for free since he's a Gold Card holder. The trip took about 20 minutes on...More

This trip from Wellington waterfront by boat takes half a day and is well worth it; the island has an interesting past as a prison camp for WW2 internees and as a quarantine station. They have managed to rid the island of pets, allowing native...More

Matiu is a great place to go! Full of history and amazing views of Wellington. I went on a sunny day and we saw over 30 lizards and several birds! The staff on the island were friendly and overall it was really enjoyable.

As you will have seen no, there isn't a Seatoun ferrry. We usually go from Days Bay because there is free parking there, and good coffee, ice-creams and food over the road so you can get your fix before leaving.
