The Elms Mission Station is the oldest European heritage site in the Bay of Plenty, and is an essential stop for all visitors to Tauranga. From this traditional English home, Maori were given the opportunity to learn about Christianity, and were educated in reading and writing, as well as agricultural and domestic skills.

I arrived 10 minutes before closing so didn't get to see in the house but had a quick walk (free) around the beautiful gardens. Well maintained and a sense of history due to the size of the trees which complement the old buildings.

Our GPS failed two running to find The Elms so we decided to write the directions down - no problem, there it was with plenty of parking out the front (not sure if this woudl be so during height of the season or school holidays). Whilst the buildings are are beautiful and worth the money it is the garden which... More

Very interesting visit. Guides lead us through the mission telling us about the mission and the Maori people who came there. Still some original buildings on the site. Our guide happened to be an ancestor of the family and that started the mission.

I visited here with a group from a cruise ship on Feb. 20. Docents took groups of 12-15 around the grounds which are very well kept. The buildings are interesting and the docents explained significant events so we got an enjoyable history lesson!

Set in lovely, quiet surroundings in a busy port city, the Elms Mission House gives one a glimpse at early settler life. The house is furnished with period furniture (some of it original to the house). We had a guided tour and the tour guide was very informative and dressed in period costume. The garden is lovely. Would recommend if... More

It's a small house but full of history and very charming estate. We went there when the official guide wasn't there but the receptionist stepped up to be the guide. She did a pretty good job. I would recommend this if you have just one hour to spare in tauranga area.

Went here one morning and as it was relatively quiet were able to get a private guided tour for a small fee. This was very interesting and our guide gave us a good introduction to the history of the mission station and the area in general. Not a huge place, but if you like history it's well worth popping in.... More

Very pretty and interesting property. The guides give you all the interesting facts about the mission house no its occupants. Kept in immaculate condition and is a wonderful piece of history.

Although my family and I were skeptical about how interesting this would be, we were very surprised by the beautiful house and its rich history. Highly recommend taking the guided tour, run by knowledgable volunteers, to see the interior of the house and library. Worth seeing to learn more about New Zealand's history and to get a taste of colonial... More

I didn't expect much. I was wrong. I just went because I was curious to find any heritage from the early contact between maori and european period. Although an ugly part of the city grew around, The Elms Mission Station is still a green and peaceful place. Brian very kindly introduced us to the main rooms and told us interesting... More
