As locals,we know the Mount well, but being on the water in a kayak gave us a different perspective on this beautiful area. The weather was perfect and our guide Estelle, was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.Only the orcas and dolphins were missing. We enjoyed the experience and would certainly recommend it to visitors and indeed, other locals.

We were the only two on the Lake McLaren Kayak & Waterfall Walk Tour on the 29th December which we thought was strange considering the website had mentioned it required a minimum of 4 to run the tour. Brad was our tour guide and he was very informative and helpful. Unfortunately, water had been released out of the lake the day before and our kayak tour lasted less than two hours, which included Brad's de-brief on how to kayak. We did not receive any hot chocolate as advertised and were only offered chocolate biscuits at the conclusion of the tour. We also never walked to a waterfall as advertised. For $99 per person, my daughter and I did not think it was not good value for money.

Response from Estelle L, Owner at Canoe & Kayak Bay of Plenty
Responded Jan 11, 2015
We're sorry to hear your were not satisfied with your kayak tour and that it did not meet your expectations. Whilst we prefer a minimum of 4 on our tours, it is at our discretion to still operate with lower numbers as in the past we have found that many people enjoy a private and personal tour to get away from the crowds. However, the larger the group, the longer the tour generally takes. Whilst hot chocolate and chocolates/cookies are always on offer on every tour, we will ensure all our guides clearly offer both even on a hot summers day. We're sorry if our description of the tour was not clear enough in regards to the waterfall walk, which takes place at the conclusion of the kayaking, not on route. We will make the necessary advertising amendments to ensure this is more clearly explained so that others are more aware. We thank you for your feedback which we take very seriously.

We booked last minute and too late for the BOP kayaking and were offered the McLaren lake experience instead. I wasn't keen but we wanted to take in what was our first kayak experience so went ahead and booked. Estelle and a colleague (so sorry i forgot your name) met as near the cafe and instantly made us comfortable and were clearly lovely people. As first timers we were given full instructions and practiced movements on land first, they were well-delivered and easy to follow and very thorough. The lake setting was amazing, serene and picturesque. We had a lovely experience out on the lake and loved every minute. On the way, Estelle who is English but calls NZ home, shared some interesting information about the flora and fauna....NZ is such an amazing place. Then there was a short walk through the forest with more flora and fauna information, just to be clear, neither my husband nor I are into plants but this was interesting because Estelle shared info linked it to local culture. At the end of our trip, Estelle suggested we visit Mt Manganui beach and helped us there leading the way. Even then, they were so helpful, waiting for us when we got separated in traffic a few times - it just shows how genuinely friendly they are! Thanks guys.

Our family did not have a lot of experience with Kayaking, but I convinced our cousins that Kayaking would be an excellent option to see the Bay of Plenty and get some exercise. The morning was excellent and the company even better! The tour was enjoyable and the sights well worth the effort. If you want to enjoy a different experience and see the sights, then this should be an option.
