This is an excellent museum. Don't go in there expecting a 'big city' museum experience. It is a small provincial museum, and should be judged in that context. The exhibits were very interesting - and relevant. Plenty of information without too much 'clutter'. Be prepared to read, watch and learn - and you won't be disappointed. The staff are friendly... Unfortunately they were setting up an exhibit in part of the museum so we were limited in what we saw. I nearly scored less but I suspect we would have enjoyed it more if all areas were open. Loved to caravan.

As a local I should come here more often. Unfortunietly I don't. They change things around in here often and have new things for visitors (and locals) to look at all the time. There displays are well looked after and the signage etc is al lvery informative. The staff are always very friendly and helpful to locals and visitors. They... More

It was a rainy day and we were looking for something to pass the time with. The museum is right behind the iSite so we stopped by. It's very inexpensive 3$ for students 5$ for adults. It's both an art gallery and a museum, there are some really cute displays such as the caravan. It's also quite informative about the... More

This is our first visit to New Zealand but we've been lots of other places. New Zealand's medium and larger towns all seem to have nice museums. But Taupo's is the best we've seen for any small town anywhere. Mauri history, local art or various sorts, forest/logging history, fishing history. It's all there. We visited, drove on for another business... More

Small, compact but well laid out and interesting. See the miniature timber yard. Outside is a fountain where natural volcanic water is building a terraced area in colored deposits.

The museum would be okay if it was free but considering it's not it is poor value for money. My son liked the dinosaur hunt looking for the hidden toys throughout the place. I ended up helping him since the rest of the collection was quite boring.

This museum is quite small, but does have some nice attractions, such as the caravan, a Maori house and woodcutting history, but we were surprised to find that it only took us 20-30 minutes to get around. The cost, $5, is reasonable, and the staff were helpful.

Pleasant museum to get an overview of the geography of the area and history of the Maori people. $5 each entry fee.

Lots of interesting displays. I was interested in the volcanic history of the area and extent of previous events. Nice little art gallery also.
