Great little spot and dog friendly
Apr 2019 • Couples
What a great little spot, great walks through bush trails or across open fields. Something for all levels of fitness.
Wonderful view across the lake (especially at sunset) and stands of Kauri trees.

A dog friendly park even with a ball and "flinger" provided. BYO poop bags :-)

Hidden gem in the city

Great place to walk and clear the head - lots of interesting tracks, trees and birdlife...some steep pinches and tree roots so not accesible for everyone but some areas easier than others - wonderful stand of redwoods and kauri

New Plymouth's secret forest
Oct 2018 • Family
I live on the boundary of Barrett Domain and I absolutely love it. You can really stretch your legs through a range of tracks and enjoy the forest surrounds and birdlife. It's dog friendly (not suitable for bikes as there are a lot of elderly people who use the tracks). Great for small children as there are some cool destination points and the walks are very easy.

A great place to walk the dog
Jul 2018 • Friends
Our whippets love the Barrett’s Domain and it is one of their favourite places to walk and given the other dogs and owners we encounter we are not alone. There are 4-5 different routes possible so walkers seldom get bored and the lake is a Picturesque place to rest.

Away from the hurly burly.

Easy tracks with beginner inclined. Not for the unsteady due to roots and rough tracks. In winter expect some mud. About 2-3 kms on inner walk around but u can add kms and difficulty depending on where u start and finish and what trails u choose. Used by local dog walkers, runners, family groups and even the odd pushchair mum with little ones in tow. I have met bird watchers as well and always feel safe here as there is usually people 10mins ahead or behind you.
Babbling creeks native bush, a bird filled lake and no sound of traffic make this a pleasant and easy if not light cardio workout if u want to make it so or just an easy ramble.

Fantails galore
Feb 2018 • Couples
Love going to this reserve. Not too tough in terms of terrain, always quiet, dog can run off the lead without issues. There are tons of native birds here particularly fantails which we love. Sucks and swans on the lagoon too. Could do with a rubbish bin somewhere though as we pick up people’s trash and have to take it home to dispose of it. Gorgeous place though.

Beautiful but not quite for prams
Sep 2017 • Family
Beautiful place to take the family and have a walk. Not the best to take the pram as the tracks are just stones - will be using the front pack next time. Would still highly recommend.

Lots of history
May 2017 • Solo
Rotokare/Barrett Domain is a mix of ecology and history, especially now that new information signs are being installed. There is a variety of walks within the domain (follow the signs) but be sure to take the main track right through to the end - that will take you to the lagoon with its bird wildlife.

A nice way to stretch the legs and tire out the kids. :)

A great breathing space

I take my dog down to this park frequently as it is a tranquil environment, the Barrett Domain is perfect for de-stressing after a long day at the office. When you enter the domain, you hear the water rushing and the birds singing - if you really want to hear a musical bird orchestra then you should definitely go down in the evening (not too late of course).

Great place to take to tire the dog out
Feb 2017 • Solo
Barrett Domain is a calm and tranquil green space to get away from the hustle and bustle of inner city New Plymouth.

If you are the sort of person that loves the sound of birds chirping and rivers flowing than this park is for you.
