I went to school just over the road from Tupare when it was still a private residence and we took field trips to see the native trees in the grounds. House now open for daily tours (11am start) that allows a close up look at the tremendous carved woodwork in several rooms. More history in the gardeners cottage as well... More

This garden is fun to explore and when you get right to the bottom by the river there's plenty of space for a picnic (there's a BBQ you can use) and some games. We went for a family festival and it was great fun- had a swim in the river and enjoyed playing on the swing and under the giant... More

I decided to take a walk from New Plymouth, it is quite a long way but we'll worth the walk. What a beautiful location, the gardens are just wonderful and the house so pretty, it was a shame I arrived too late for the house tour. Daily at 11. So pleased I took the effort to go along to the... More

We loved this place. Tupare was the home of the Matthews family. It is now owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council and is a Garden of National Significance. A very helpful man gave us a tour which was prebooked. Sir Russell Matthews planted magnificent redwoods, copper beeches and deciduous maples. The hydrangeas were beautiful.

Spent a lovely hour at Tupare, could of spent double this if we had time. Most impressed with the Russell Ave leading up to the main house with Hydrangeas of deep blue and white. Also loved the Gardeners Cottage which had lots of info on the family and house/gardens. Lovely walking alongside the river.

The most wonderful place to take time out and relax. So well maintained and very friendly helpful staff. This is a free attraction and well worth a visit even if you are not a keen gardener

Beautiful gardens and estate - with walkways and on some days the house is open for tours. A steep walk down to the river, where there is a grill - so that you can cook your food and have a picnic near the river's edge.

Visited these beautiful gardens and did the boundary walk. Fell in love with the hydrangas which were beautifully in bloom. Found the Burma Walk part slightly scary. Need to have better footwear than I did. Going back to do house tour and do garden walk. Did I mention the glorious hydrangas!

I frequent this place regularly & my granddaughter had her birthday here a couple of years ago. she has requested this again for her 4th birthday as they have a special day here in January with a carnival like atmosphere. This garden is on a fairly steep hill with water gardens trickling down beside the walkway to the lower slopes.... More
