First-time luging. It was fun but we probably went on their busiest day ever. Big crowds. We pre-purchased our tickets so we bypassed a 45-minute at the base to buy gondola tickets. But at the top, we waited 90 minutes to ride the luge. It’s beautiful at the top. Staff was friendly but there were not a lot of them - and very little direction for first-timers. They could use some video screens in their lines to teach first-timers how to luge as the safety demo was a 2-minute group talk in your luge before you go down the mountain. Be warned that there are no spotters along the luge route if you have any problems. You are on your own for 1km. We chose the scenic route and were very cautious with speed so a couple of our luges did stop on the track due to lack of momentum. My 13yo did panic a few times when she stopped, and I had to stay behind her to give her a push and encouragement, but our 4yo (who was sitting tandem) loved it. There are 6 yo expert lugers that fly down the mountain with no fear and can sometimes get a little close or even can bump you at full speed. Take note and caution. Despite the lack of safety, luging was fun. We only had time to go down once during our 3 hour visit due to the lines for everything, but we had a good time - and I definitely recommend the experience.

We were very unlucky the only day we had time for Skyline Rotorua, it was rainy and cold, but it was the only day we had time and it was open still open so we still went. We had 5 luge rides and, despite the rain, it was so incredibly fun. You go faster than I was expecting, and there are different tracks you can take with different curves, tunnels, etc. There is a sky lift at the bottom that takes you back up after each run. If the weather was nicer, we could have done those luge rides all day. They were so fun. Afterwards, using your helmet, you can go see your pictures and pick and choose if you want to buy any.

The family Christmas lunch at the Skyline, Rotorua NZ was wonderful. Welcome drink to warm up and a good spread of food awaiting and taste good too. Dinning with bird's eye view of Rotorua below in a cozy ambience was a treat. The service was good and friendly. It was crowded but the festivity Christmas mood is heightened, especially with arrival of Santa cheering up our grandchildren.

I really wanted to like this, and it was fun, but I failed to understand why this is as expensive as it was. I know the luge rides have discounts for packages (buying more than one and season passes) but it’s still felt prohibitively expensive, especially for the community in general. I would love to see the luge rides deeply discounted for children (even though I did not have a child with me) or students or seniors, etc. Perhaps an educator discount or a professor discount would be nice as well. We were just a bit sticker-shocked. But, of course, I wanted to try it once. So we bought a pack of three, together with the gondola rides and the wine tasting (the person at the front desk assured us this was cheaper than just two luges and the wine tasting and the gondola rides). The wine tasting seemed priced appropriately, as did the gondola ride, but there’s no real operating cost with the luge to justify the expense. I know that we have to ride up the gondola ride, but it just felt like for such a short experience, it was quite expensive.
On to the experience itself. I am in my late 50s, and I really enjoyed it, although I did go quite slow. I took the easiest trail, and my husband went with me, and then he took the harder trail without me while I went upstairs and enjoyed the view. Lots of teenagers and kids having a fun driving fast. It was lovely to see their giggles. However, it did not seem that organized at the top. When we went to get our helmets and our actual equipment, there were a few employees there, but they were mostly chatting with one another, and they were deeply complaining about some of the folks, which made me a little sad to hear. They should be joyful if they’re working a ride like that, although I’m sure it is quite a monotonous job.
The views at the top are amazing! (see photos).

So many things to do, not enough time to do them!
Although are day started off a bit disappointing as the zipline was closed for the day, which put an end to our half day adventure pass ideas, being the gondola, zipline, Skyswing & 5 luge rides. We then pivoted to the gondola, skyswing & 7 luge rides combo instead, and that ended up being a very good substitute.
The luge rides were the best part, and by doing 7 rides, we could ride the 5 different tracks once, and then pick two tracks to ride a second time. The younger members of the family started off a bit timidly on the luge, but were up to speed by the second ride, and we all had a blast.
Make sure you try starting from both starting areas for something different, and try both chairlifts back up to the top.
The Skyswing was a bit extra we thought we'd try since we were there, and it was good fun. Over quickly, but good fun while doing it! Great views from the top, and good laughs while watching the screamers have a go while waiting for your turn.
Also good views from the gondola across the town & the lake. Good facilities and a great day out was had by all. A MUST visit.
ps- get there early to get a few/most of your rides in before the coachloads arrive, and it does take a bit longer to wait for your next luge ride.

My visit to Skyline Rotorua for the gondola and luge experience was a memorable one, filled with fun activities and stunning scenery. However, there were a few aspects that could have been better addressed to enhance the overall experience.
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the luge ride, offering thrilling twists and turns amidst breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The gondola ride itself was also enjoyable, providing a scenic journey to the top of the hill.
While the attractions themselves were impressive, I couldn't help but notice the need for more staff presence.
Except for the first ride, the lines for the luge were quite long, and additional staff and signage explaining the divide between first ride and repeats could have helped to streamline the process and reduce wait times.
Furthermore, I observed that some areas could have been better maintained in terms of hygiene, the hamlets in particular as the riders wears the used helmets were people drop them off. It would have been beneficial to see more proactive efforts in cleaning and sanitizing the hamlets as well providing a more visible signage for the location of the hair nets, especially given the current health concerns.
Without mentioning clearer signage would have been helpful, particularly for first-time visitors like myself. Better signage could improve navigation around the park and provide more information about the various attractions available.
Photography for the luge rides and the gondola could have synchronized many of the us didn’t realize that we aren’t able to pick up the photos for the luge rides at the exit.
Overall, despite these areas for improvement, my experience at Skyline Rotorua was undeniably fun and memorable. With a few adjustments to staffing levels, hygiene practices, and signage, it has the potential to offer an even more exceptional experience for visitors.

We absolutely loved our day spent here!!
Recommend buying tickets online as it was such a breeze getting there and walking through straight on to the gondola instead of having to line up. Also not having to line up for luge tickets either.
The luges were so much fun! We got the 5 luge ride package so we could try each track.
Nice, friendly staff and the views are beautiful!

The Skyline gondola and Volcano Hills wine tasting was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon in Rotorua. Despite the gloomy weather, the view of the lake and across the township was spectacular. The staff at the Volcano Hills tasting room were friendly & knowledgeable and the wines were excellent. We also enjoyed a generous antipasto platter with our wines and ended up buying a couple of bottles to bring home. $55 for the gondola ride and 5 wines was good value.

Im not an adrenaline junkie but we had planned a trip to Stratosphere and my husband wanted to do the luge. I’m glad we did. You really can pace it to your thrill level. He did the gravity track and loved it. I started with the beginner track and moved up to legend and then twister. All were great. I enjoyed the curves. It was easy to maneuver and control your speed. It was raining when we first got there. We grabbed full body length ponchos for $6 and had fun without getting wet at all. Luckily the rain subsided so we ended up with a lovely view at the top. They take photos and video of you on the track and chairlifts for purchase.

This was the top attraction that we wanted to do while we were in Rotorua.
Skyline offered a host of different activities starting with just a round trip gondola ride, zip lines, luge, walking trails, mountain biking course and beautiful views of Rotorua.
Due to our time constraints, we decided on the three ride luge and gondola ride. It was a perfect day.
For the luge, we headed right after exiting the visitor center. We had to grab a helmet but we spent some time rummaging to find one that did not smell so bad. Staff scanned our ticket on each run and quickly went through the ride instructions before letting us choose our starting track. We rode three different tracks and enjoyed the speed and scenery. Our luge was easy to control and being early there was no one else on the tracks so we ride as fast or as slow as we wanted.
At the bottom of the track, we got out of our cart and had to push it forward until it attached itself to the bottom of the chairlift. It took about 10 minutes or so to get back up to the top.
Eventually more people showed up and kids as well as grandparents joined the luge ride down showing that any age could ride!

Is there any specific time limit for the Half Day Adventure Pass of Rotorua? If there is then what is the time limit (from when to when)?

Hello
Thank you for your question.
Parking is located at the bottom of the Gondola. It is a large car pack but does still get quite full so i would suggest visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Thanks,

Is there another way to get to the top of the luge track other than the chair lift?
Written October 30, 2019
Hi Chloe, due to some tree felling our walking track is out of use at the moment. However on prior arrangement we can transport you from the bottom of the luge back to the top terminal via one of our company vans.

I am about to buy tickets online, I will be over in 2 weeks. I have added tickets choice to my cart and the next step is payment. Is there a way to select the date or are the tickets valid for weeks?
Written October 25, 2019
I wouldn’t buy online you can get on the day at the counter. Just as easy.
Written October 26, 2019
I am interested in Stargazing as well as Night Luge ride. If I arrive early for stargazing, can I buy just the Night Luge ride? If possible, I would like to purchase in advance, a Gondola + Night Luge Ride + Stargazing ticket. I do not see such offer on the website. I am not interested in dinner or food tickets.
Written October 2, 2019
Hi
You can book in the Gondola and Stargazing and then purchase the night Luge Tickets on the day. If you have any questions feel free to email us via our website
