About
This place is temporarily closed due to a natural disaster. Rotorua Museum is currently closed for earthquake strengthening. In the meantime Rotorua Museum is running a limited programme of exhibitions, events and education programmes in other venues around Rotorua. We also run free twice-daily tours (11am & 2pm) in Government Gardens - including the history of the buildings, battles and historical sites around the gardens, the sculpture trail, and the ongoing programme that has seen the release of several endangered New Zealand falcons into the gardens.

The Rotorua Museum and Art Gallery is a fine piece of New Zealand craftsmanship, dating from 1908. It is built in Elizabethan Revival style, said to be rhe best example lof this architectural style in New Zealand. The Museum is situated in Government Gardens, near the centre of Rotorua. New Zealand is known as the "Shakey isles" and entry to the Museum has been closed to general visitors, while the structure is being upgraded. The Gardens and the Bathouse ared worth viewing iin themsevles.

The buildings themselves are magnificent, and were once the seat of government, when Rotorua was the capital, not Wellington. However, there was a fairly recent earthquake (November 2016 I think) that has left the building being fully assessed for safety, and any movement related damage. It will open again in due course. It is still a bit of a photo magnet though.

Have found that entrance fees in nz are pricey but the $20 per adult to enter the museum housed in the old bathhouse was worth the $. Allow 2-3 hrs to view the establishment with visible remnants of the old thermal baths, galleries, local maori and war history and even photos of when the building was used as a niteclub! Great to see it has been preserved for future tourists. Cafe on site helpful. Do see the short film - worth the surprise. Unfortunately not all areas of the museum would be wheelchair friendly with a few staircases to climb.

Although the museum is currently not open due to building work, I would recommend driving by as it is very pretty as the standard of building in NZ goes, and happens to by right be the blue baths and Polynesian spa, and not far from the tourist information building. The gardens are perfect for a picnic and there are some spots to see geothermal activity without paying.

The museum is closed while the city determines how to reinforce the building to make it earthquake resistant. We were told it would probably not reopen until 2020 or later.

Went by to find fencing up and signs stating Museum Closed.
Apparently the building suffered some structural damage from an earthquake that occurred some distance away. The building is no longer accessible until this is fixed. It could be quite some time. Double check online before attending.
Building from the outside is brilliant.

The building and gardens are absolutely magnificent and they have a great little café with superb service. There was an amazing exhibit about the Maori fighting in World War 1. The architecture alone is worth a visit!

I really enjoyed this part of our visit, so full of information and just immersing yourself into the past and detailed information on the Maori heritage and culture. Only wish I we had made more time for this place.
