Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

On a very very rainy evening we waited for our bus pickup, Wallace our driver was welcoming and gave a good commentary on local Maori, customs & words. Turns out our bus was actually a Waka, used to guide us to the village. Once there the staff were, very nice and explained due to the rain our visit to each... More

Visited here with Scenic as an inclusive excursion. Collected from the hotel by bus and driven to the village by a real 'character ' . On the coach a chief is selected, this was my husband, rather astonished he actually found this a wonderful experience, telling 'his people' what to do, leading them through the various areas of the village... We took our teenage student from Germany and our own teenager- this experience was excellent from the bus driver's patter, the demonstrations of early Maori life, hilarious tourist involvement in the haka and the delicious hangi food. They even catered well for our young vegan friend. From a Pakeha Kiwi perspective I felt really proud of how our tangata whenua... More

Stumbled across a leaflet and thought it'd be worth a go. Boy are we glad we did! In the time allotted it was really well organised and just enough covered to give you a good insight into Maori culture. The version of Powhiri was really cool as a welcome, especially given we were all set into the scene as a... More

Offered a bit more than many Maori experiences, as the first part of the evening gives an introduction to around 5 specific aspects, followed by dancing, singing etc. Yes, it is a bit production like at times, as they have a large number of guests to handle each evening, but that did not blunt the enjoyment. If you are lucky... More

The evening begins by getting picked up from wherever you are staying in town. The bus driver was a wonderfully charming and funny part of the experience. The evening was beautiful and we got to learn so much about the proud maori culture. The organisational skills of these guys was phenomenal! There had to of been 100 people there, but... More

Really? Excellent? No way, too long, too much people, and food and feast ? Imagine 6 buses of tourists, eating at the same time.. poor quality, worse than school canteen, " Table one stand up and go for food, now table two..... now table one can get more food " etc. Parts about history were ok, songs and other Maori traditional...
