We booked the R. Tucker Thompson as a cruise excursion from RCCL's Ovation Of The Seas. We had a great time on this tall ship even though the day was a bit breezy and cloudy. The crew were friendly and helpful. The guests were able to help hoist the sails, climb the rigging and go out on the bowsprit nets. Delicious scones and a BBQ lunch were served on board. The boat anchored off of a scenic island and guests had the option to explore the island or relax on board. We were fortunate enough to have several dolphins swim and jump alongside the boat, making for some great pictures. We highly recommend the R. Tucker Thompson.

Our family trip on the R Tucker Thompson was possibly the most fantastic thing we did all year! The crew are wonderful and very knowledgable. We helped to rig the ship, steer and even climbed to the front of the bow sprit and the rigging - including our 10 year old son and 12 year old daughter who both made it to the yard arms, about 20m up the mast! We stopped at a gorgeous bay and lept from the ship via a swing tied to the yard arm. We went on to collect Kina and then ate them on board after the marvalous lunch provided by the crew. Under sail the ship made nearly no noise. A beautifully tuned and smooth ride. Hats off to the crew and the build of the ship.

Go, do it, you won't regret!

Kia ora and thank you for the lovely review. Well done for giving everything a go, that's what the ship is there for! Your children are obviously in training for a 7-day voyage in a few years as climbing out on the yards is part of the programme!

The sail was an excellent experience with capable crew; however, the wind was very light and we therefore had difficulty with sail power only. Guests were allowed to climb the masts and swing out into the water. Lunch was good with second servings of the food available. We made a stop and took a zodiac to shore to walk through the forest to view birds.

Kia ora Thank you for your kind review, unfortunately, we have had some light winds lately and try to make the most of it - so glad you still enjoyed your experience with us!

My partner and I booked this boat trip as it had great reviews and was recommended. We were left disappointed for a number of reasons. We weren't given any information about the bay, the islands or the ship. The stopover at the island was rushed, you only get 45 minutes so we didn't have enough time to go for the walk and a swim. This is the only opportunity to go for a swim. It would've have been nice to stop at more than 1 island or even go around more of the islands and hear some history about them. It felt like the trip was over after lunch as afterwards we spent most of the time just drifting in the middle of the bay not really seeing anything.
Only thing to do is climb up the rigging or out onto the bow. Advertised as you can get involved in sailing the ship, this is just pulling a few ropes at the start and the end to put the sails up and down.
A good trip for kids, wouldn't recommend for anyone else. Far too overpriced for the experience you get. Felt like I hadn't really experienced being out in the bay of islands at all after paying $160 each. Have been on many boat trips in different countries and this was probably the worst one especially for the price paid.
The scones and lunch were nice.

Thank you for your review. We are disappointed that your experience was different to your expectations, however we feel a review of Terrible is unwarranted and unjustified. Unfortunately, we do not have control over the weather, and lack of wind can and will affect the sailing of the vessel. Sailing the ship can be dynamic when there is wind, when there is a lack of wind, there will be less to do, though our crew always try to make the most of it. In the time allowed, visits to more than one island on a sailing vessel is not feasible and you would likely have felt a lot more rushed than you already did. We are a working tall ship which people can participate in. It sounds like you may have preferred a more structured tour with commentary? We're glad you enjoyed the morning tea and lunch. We wish you well in your travels.

We enjoyed spending the day onboard the R. Tucker Thompson schooner in the Bay of Islands. First, it is a wonderful boat, very well maintained, and the crew was great. Second, Bay of Islands is a beautiful place to explore in a schooner and it was great to take time to indulge the views. We left from the Russell wharf (the ferry transfers from/to Paihia are included) and sailed to Moturoa Island. We helped hoist the sail which was a great experience. On the way, we were served tea, coffee and some jelly and creme on freshly baked scones! Miam! We then stopped at Motorua Island for an hour, exploring the surroundings, bathing, and we had lunch on the boat while being anchored in the bay. We then sailed back to the Russell wharf. On the way back, we climbed the rigging to the top of the mast: what a view! This was amazing! We could feel the wind gusts from there and enjoy the view of the islands and of the boat from above. We also explored the bowsprit using the bow net and felt like we were flying above the water. What an awesome experience. We highly recommend it! (Also, the boat was not at full capacity which probably helped with seating and the overall experience).

We sailed on the R. Tucker Thompson. It was such an amazing time. The master and crew were so welcoming and engaging. They would answer any questions that you had. They allowed passengers to climb the rigging, help hoist and furl sails, sit on the bowsprit and swim off of the ship. We stopped at an island for lunch. The lunch, and the morning tea and scones were delicious. Much of the proceeds go to funding youth programs onboard. I highly recommend it for everyone!

We had the best experience ever on the R Tucker Thompson as the day was sunny and the seas smooth. We were able to help set the sails and walk out to the front of the ship on the netting which was truly exciting. Both morning tea and lunch were great and most of the guests either had a swim or took the tender to the beach in the cove where we set anchor for lunch. We the set sail and sailed the Bay of Islands for the next 2 hours where we both had the chance to steer the ship. We both would like to thank Wayne and his crew for such a fantastic experience and making it a unforgettable day that we will both remember for the rest of our lives.

We are a family of 5 with three kids ranging from 12 to 4 and had a fabulous day sailing on the R Tucker Thompson. The crew were so attentive to us and there were many new experiences for the kids to enjoy. We had a stunning encounter with dolphins and at lunchtime we anchored at an island that you could explore. The food was delicious and it's a great cause to support. I highly recommend this trip.

Kia ora and thank you for sharing your feedback. We sometimes get asked is it alright for children, the answer is "Oh yes, bring them on!". Thank you for choosing to support our purpose, it's appreciated. Mauri ora.

It's a fabulous sailing ship and a super day out on it. Captain Wayne was amazing. A local Maori who knows how to sail, knows the history and makes you laugh. The rest of the crew was great too. Lunch was really good. A highlight for me was being able to climb up the rigging.

Only bad thing I'd say is that it was quite a full boat and a bit tough to move around. I would rather pay a bit more and have fewer people on the boat.

Kia ora and thank you for your review. We're so pleased you had a great time. The crew try really hard to make it a special day. Yes the challenge of passenger numbers is perennial. Today we have 4 people booked, tomorrow 46. We have asked people if they would like to switch days but most if not all have other commitments. Mauri ora.
