Visited with some friends from Australia and felt that we had been robbed with the cost of admission to the museum (which should have been free). You can get through the museum in about 10 mins max, so don’t bother with that. Cafe and Chocolate shop at the front of the premise was the best thing there.

It is a shame that you didn't enjoy the museum, we have people spend up to 2 hours in there. They all seem to enjoy the experience. Perhaps you were put off as there is quite a bit of reading in some parts. This is a privately owned museum, therefore a charge needs to be made. We mostly receive 5 stars, but realise we cannot please all

Ordered a Decaf flat white coffee. It was terrible. No krema, more like an instant coffee. . Drank the flat white coffee it was yuck and ask them have you got any sweetener? They replied sorry we don't have any. Only on the table is white sugar and raw sugar. Well I am so disappointed as I am a diabetic that i need a sweetener for my coffee. It turn out i did not drink it the coffee. You need to up your game. People expect a quality coffee for $5 not a cup of yuck!

If you’re into chocolate then this place has a beautiful range of chocolates and truffles to try. We bought a selection of single pieces so we could try a variety. Yes it’s not cheap like supermarket chocolate but that’s the point right? It’s hand made quality. Was somewhat disappointed to learn you can no longer watch the chocolate being made - it’s closed due to covid - but still worth a visit just to buy and try some different flavours.
Our family rated the BlackBerry crème the best, followed by the caramel and then the raspberry crème!

This is our second visit here in a year and it doesn’t disappoint. The chocolate shop is wonderful to visit and choose some treats! There are other food items to browse as well. There are other things on site, the cafe, museum and shop with clothing, etc. good for browsers!

My husband and I stopped by Silky Oak as part of a short shore excursion tour. We didn't spend much time here and there were no demonstrations occurring of the chocolate making however we did purchase a bag of the chocolate covered honeycomb pieces and oh my goodness they were fabulous. I love chocolate and this was definitely good quality stuff!

When we arrived we parked the car in the ample car park and made our way to the cafe. There was a sign on another building saying no dogs but not anywhere near the cafe. No signs on the road signage at all. When we went in the woman rudely told us no dogs on the property at all. They had to stay in the car !!!!!! So we left. All I can say is if they are that vehemently against dogs they should have road signage saying so. Then you would not have the hassle of driving in there only having to leave again. They really are not the norm and should let people know at their gate and on their website . I for one will not be returning.

This place has a pamphlet encouraging people to come visit; it is unlikely someone would discover it by accident. Not a terrible place by any means, however somewhat overpriced, a bit lackluster
The museum is ok, not terribly interesting for children (not interactive). Gives a fair bit of information on the history of chocolate; a bit dry at times.
The factory is disappointing as you cannot really sample chocolates without buying them - which i was (naively) expecting in the middle of wine country (or reasonably close to Arataki Honey factory). The chocolates were ok, but fairly expensive when compared to artisans.
The cafe was ok; very similar to any cafes in NZ.

Had lunch at the cafe and found the food to be good. Chilli hot chocolate delicious also.
Was a bit disappointed as my 13 yo wanted a ham and salad sandwich. They did have some but sold out. She had been a little unwell the day before and therefore didn't feel like much. We asked if they could make another up for her but the answer was no as the kitchen was busy. It only takes a couple of minutes to make a sandwich. I found this a bit inflexible as between savoury and sweet we spent over $100. She eventually ordered a fruit salad which she enjoyed.
I would have expressed my disappointment but was afraid of being branded as one of those rude customers.

We always appreciate knowing at the time if people are disappointed, then it gives us the opportunity to explain or rectify the problem.
If we are not busy we try to help by making something as requested. But when we are busy, and we were then it is not possible. It is not like a kitchen at home. A commercial kitchen is set up during busy times i.e. lunch or breakfast to cater for the foods required during that time frame. They would not have had bread, or the fillings on hand to make the sandwich. Sandwiches are made in the morning prior to us opening to the public.

We came here with our family including 2 kids and granny. The museum was OK. I found it interesting but the kids were a bit bored. The food at the restaurant was lovely and the chocolate was delicious. We bought a good few truffles from them and they are wonderful.

Call in to have a look around and grab a coffee. The chocolates are great unfortunately the lady there was a little grumpy and her customer service needed some work. Thought maybe she was having a bad day. Sadly got about the same responds from the 3 staff in the cafe not a welcome have a nice day or any thing won't be back prefer my coffee and cake with a smile.

We will be arriving on a cruise ship in January 2016 and would like to visit the Chocolate Factory & the Filter Room ( brewery ).
Is there public transport to these places, as we don't want to book a tour through the cruise company
Written November 21, 2015
Hello, Thank you for your enquiry. Silky Oak has a bus stop right outside our gate, but I do not think the Filter Room is on a bus route.
If you prefer not to take part in one of the cruise ship tours (which are excellent) I suggest you take the shuttle bus from the ship to the I-site they will be able to direct you to the bus stop.
If you need any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.
Regards,
Jeanette Silky Oak Chocolates
