After a steep climb up Bluff Hill, we reached the lookout at the summit. It was an attractive little structure made of red brick, with wooden benches attached and formal plantings on the grounds surrounding it. But although we were favorably impressed with the lookout itself, the view we saw from it was not that impressive.
It was primarily a view of a commercial dock, with piles of storage containers waiting to be loaded onto ships. There was no view of the city (which was blocked out by the hill) and, in my opinion, the view of the ocean was prettier from Marine Parade, on the level, without the steep hike. For that amount of effort, we were expecting more.

We drove up and yes the last kilometre is narrow and winding but two cars can pass easily enough. I wouldn’t bother walking unless you’re into walking and enjoy a meandering climb, remember you’re climbing a hill. We wondered about walking but having done would use a car.
Once up it’s a view , nice of the horizon looking to the distance though not spectacular. However lower your gaze and you see the tankers, containers lined up, lots of logs, just your normal working port which at home I would go nowhere near.

As I said tick off the list.

It was better taking one of the side roads on the hill and sneaking a photo between residents houses of the Marine Parade side view which you can’t see from the Lookout.

There is a walking tour, info can be got from the I-site , which walks you around the streets below the Lookout though it just points out buildings of interest.

If you’re driving head past the Port to the other side of Napier to Westshore where there are some nice harbour side places.

This is a top spot for having a good look over the sea and the port. The port operations are really interesting and could watch for ages. It was unfortunate that the road to the top was closed (especially during the holiday season) and the nearly 100 step walk could be challenging for people who are disabled or unfit.

Fantastic viewing point above Napier port. Quite a circuitous route to get here, especially when there were road works on the road up.
Disappointingly the view is ruined by a 6ft security fence that obstructs average height folks taking pictures. Where you can see through the viewfinder what your snapping.
Unless you enjoy channeling your inner prison cell when looking through the bars must bring back fond memories.

It’s a long, uphill, very taxing hike, for a nice view.
You have to decide if it’s worth the effort.
It’s not a very pleasant hike, and once you reach the summit, you look over the port of Napier, and the Pacific Ocean,
and after 5 minutes, you’re ready to leave.
I didn’t have a vehicle, so i hiked, and it wasn’t really a fun walk.
If you have a vehicle, it’s easy, but again, you’re ready to leave after a few minutes.

My husband cycled, the rest of the family opted to take the car. It’s a steep ride. The drive up was lovely. Gorgeous houses and neighbourhood. Always nice to get a birds eye view of where you are staying.
It costs nothing but some time. Take the walk or drive. It’s easy and lovely.

Every time we go to Napier we always go up Bluff Hill. The view is magnificent and in the winter you can see the snow.
You can look down at the port and watch it in operation.
There is a coffee service up there so you can get a coffee and sit in the wonderful garden area. There is plenty of seating. You can also take a meal up there which we did one year.
There are toilets up there also.

We had a car and was able to drive up to the lookout but the roads were quite tight. there were enough signs to lead us to the lookout. It did look like you were also able to walk up from the town.
The port is visible from the lookout area. there was plenty of grassy areas and a path along the side which had nice views of the area. There was also a small building area which had seats, tables and a circular sign post. The area was quite tidy and even though it was raining it was still worth the visit.
It was quite a nice area for views and possibly a picnic if the weather was good.

Great spot to see the sights. This was thr first place we went when we arrived in Napier and it was good to orientate ourselves.

Fun to look down on the port and see it in action. Probably not many in the world that you can see so close up.

Worth popping up to have a look if you have a car. Small steep winding roads although passable. At the top there ate gardens, toilets and ample parking. Good views over the working port where ships are loaded with logs and wider panoramic views which are quite special.
