Enter through the Deco Centre door to a whole other world. The movie gives a tangible reminder of the 31 earthquake. The books on sale can fill you in on the deco architectural style. Then the fun begins with heaps of deco clothing, hats, ceramics, and stationary.

Right in the centre of Napier, this place is definitely worth a visit. I watched a film shot from the time of the 1930s which provided an insight into life before and after the earthquake which has shaped Napier. I also purchased the self guided walking tour of Napier, which I found to be a useful guide. If you are... More

The Art Deco style became widely admired when it was first displayed at the ‘Exposition de Arts Moderness Decoratifs et Industriels’ held in Paris in 1925. The name of the style became abbreviated to ‘Art Deco’. Napier, internationally known for its Art Deco style of its buildings, hosts Tremains Art Deco Weekend mid February every year. For more than 30... More

We bought the self guide from the I-site office and walked our way through the town. We could do it at our own pace, stop for coffee when we wanted, and we learned so much from both the guide, and the information we found on and around the buildings and artefacts we were admiring. It's an amazing town, the Art... More

If coming to Napier there is no question you must take the docent guided tour which is so informative. Lovely walk through town with my wife eyeing the store and restaurants as we passed. Our guide's family was affected by the quake which made the tour even more enlightening. We took the one hour tour which I felt was plenty... More

We wanted to know more about the earthquake which had resulted in the town we see today. We booked the two hour guided walk, started off with a film giving some background, then Sue took us to various buildings, highlighting the various aspects of art deco, giving so much information in an easily digestible way. Back to the Centre for... More

We visited the Art Deco Centre in order to find out more about the history of Napier and, particularly, the 1931 earthquake that shaped the town as it is today. We were not disappointed. The Art Deco centre is staffed by very knowledgeable and helpful locals who really brought the history to life for us. We decided to go on... More

My wife is a huge fan of Art Deco and was very keen to do the Art Deco walk in Napier- looking at all the buildings which were built after the huge earthquake in 1931. We were not disappointed and the knowledgeable guide made it all come alive. You can ether do a 1 hour walk in the morning (which... More
