Don't miss this museum, and allow plenty of time for it; it is superb. Maori art and carvings, changing exhibitions, top class pottery and glassware (Emil Galle and Rene Lalique, no less!). Fascinating!

Thinking that this museum can be visited in only half an hour is a mistake, the impressive collection of the Tairawhiti Museum will set you back hours. We loved every second of it!

A great way to spend a good hour with a friend who had never visited Gisborne before. I love the Star of Canada display, it really feels like you are on that ship. The cultural local Maori stories and singing are emotional too as is the War exhibits. Then she treated me to a snack in the cafe where we sat... More

Well worthwhile visit whilst in Gizzy. Great section of Maori artifacts. However, the best by far is the Captain's cabin. Brilliantly done and really appeals to the young person in all us

A good local Museum with a lot of Maori's exhibits, such as sculptures, statues, carvings, etc, but also a special room for rare and old collections of Gisborne's town photos, very unique collections. At certain times a special gallery or exhibition is performed with specific themes. At the annex building, a special room dedicated to the Maori Battalion, memories from... More

We were staying overnight in Gisborne (Air bnb) in November 2016, and dropped into the Tairawhiti Museum, as it was in the same street as our accommodation. It's a fabulous space - much local history, as well as a good little gift shop and café. Lovely deck overlooking green space and fringed with tree ferns.
