We can find lots of Muslim halal eateries here and our favourites is Aydin Portugese Grilled Chicken. Very delicious indeed and we really missed the food there. There are also lots of second hand stores. We never feel tired of walking from Simon Street till the end of K Road... we really enjoy our long walk due to the many value for money shops along the streets..

I always feel disappointed when I walk this street. It is passed off as trendy, hip, alternative but the reality is that it is just seedy.

After reading a few of the reviews I was a little concerned about staying here.
Why did I worry? A little quirky. A little edgy. A bit bohemian and hip and reminded me of L5P in Atlanta.
Loved it. Amazing array of restaurants and vintage shops.
Would go again in a minute.

We have walked karangahape Rd everyday from our hotel. Lots of small takeaway kebab places, Japanese sushi, dumpling. Lots of homeless people during the day and evening. We have walked the road all the way from Symonds to ponsonby. Lots of adult sex shops. We didn't feel comfortable walking at night . We did not find any good restaurants as you would find in the tourist areas. This is a culturally diverse, eclectic street more as a suburb for locals and not for tourist.

Had no idea what was what having just arrived from Adelaide at about 8 p.m. This road was literally around the corner from the Hotel as we ventured out for dinner. Seemed busy enough and plenty of eateries, so away we went.
At no stage did we feel unsafe (11 and 14 y/o in tow), and it is probably a great haunt for a bunch of lads out on the town, but sideways glances at passive beggars camped in doorways and wobbly (drunk) punters tacking along the footpath is no longer my "thing".

Forget the glittering towers of corporate power down town or the upper class yawn of ponsonby and parnell.
You want real life great coffee, great food, great atmoshere , great clubs.
Try karangahape rd.
Yup its grimey and theres "strange folk, who live their lives "
But this is the city. This is the heart and to be honest there is no better place!
Take your time. Walk around. Go on an adventure. St kevs arcade, cross st, myers park, mercury lane, beresford sq. Verona ,lim chor, illicit, revel, allaluja,
Good times.
At night hit the clubs. Hundreds to choose from. Stay on the main rds , krd, pitt st etc . As these are more populated.
Be friendly, be open! And you will be fine!

We had walked down K street several times going to other areas like Ponsonby. Twice to stop in at the Eagle Bar. K street is kind of on the fringe street with various venues attracting the likes of those who enjoy used clothing, female strippers and gays bars. We did enjoy stopping at the Eagle several nights as it seems to have all the fun going on. There are many store fronts with items on resale or used clothes. Not bad if you're hunting for a bargain but kind of not the inviting area you would like it to be.

Long known as Auckland's red light district, K Rd is now rather more tame. It is still home to numerous 'adult' shops and clubs, gay bars, and old style pubs, but increasingly has some great cafes, bars, and art galleries as they spread down the strip from Ponsonby Road. Seems to have lost its once Pacific Island feel and is now more taken over by newer Asian arrivals. More interesting for people watching than Ponsonby Road, but don't leave your wallet next to you on an outside table - well would you anywhere?

I used to work at a department store in K'Rd in the 80s and things have hardly changed. plenty of colourful characters and odd shops with masses of retro and ethnic stuff. Quaint cafes and an EXCELLENT manufacturing jeweller in George Courts Building if you need anything mended or made. A great place to stroll and enjoy an enormous diversity of shops and locals.
