Like a cemetery out of a movie ....a horror movie. Worth popping in if you are passing by but not something that everyone will be talking about! It spans 3 sides of the road and both sides of the bridge. Needs some looking after and upgrading.

This ancient cemetery is located in a park in the middle of town, and dates back to the 1840's.
It included tombstones of people of numerous faiths and origins.

Beautiful cemetery, but unfortunately it's in shambles at present. It could be due to the recent cyclone - which has taken out some of the nature tail that connects to the cemetery.

I stumbled on this during a walk around upper Queen's and the CBD. At first, the jewish and Catholic part seemed harmless, even beautiful in it's historical splendor. But I crossed the street to the bigger part of the cemetery and suddenly my life was in danger. I never strayed from the path, but ended up in a quiet corner far from the hustle and bustle of the busy street above, and was accosted by a drugged out homeless man. He began yelling and screaming at me, demanding money, which was the least vulgar demand he made of me. I avoided talking, eye contact and quickly started walking toward the nearest exit. He proceeded to follow me, at one point practically running, while still screaming obscenities and what he'd do to me once he got me alone. once up the stairs, a passing stranger came to my rescue and whisked me away up the street, where the homeless man still followed for about 200 yards. I was terrified. The helpful stranger told me that the locals avoid the cemetery and I should do so in the future. The beauty and mystic-ness of this place is not worth your life. Avoid at all costs.

We stayed at the Waldorf st martins which is adjacent to the cemetary. It is very eerie walking by every night. This part of the city is not for tourist.

Straight up, not everyone sees cemetaries as a nice place to visit. Understood. But I find them great sources of history, and contemplation, and beautiful stonemasonry.
The historic cemetary is in the middle of Auckland, split by the main road in one direction and Grafton Street Bridge in the other. We parked in a nearby laneway and walked over, down to the historic section of the lower half (there is a sign at the corner entrance explaining its history). The half under the bridge is so overgrown and old that graves are hidden among ferns, behind trees, and headstones seem to grow out of established tree trunks. It has an archaeological feel, with toppled overgrown monuments as far as the eye can see down hill into the bushland. We explored that side up to the wall, where some of the tombstones from grave relocations (due to the road construction) have been built into the wall. The newer upper side is open and modern, featuring beautiful monuments.
I wouldn't recommend visiting after dark as the site (although patrolled) is just plain risky, but in the day you have something really special.

History in the raw as what was Auckland’s first cemetry evolved, even absorbing the magnificent Grafton, while bush flourished. Worth treating as walk for its own sake

Thought I could cut through to make the walk to K road more interesting, but It did not really do that. Should have maybe spent more time.

Just near the far end of Queen St you'll find this cemetery. It's larger than you might think & you'll have to cross the street to see all the sections, segregated by religious conviction: Anglican, Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, etc. The cemetery's well cared for & many of the inscriptions are still legible. As you arrive / leave check out the very grand, ornate Victorian Public Toilets. It's remarkable how much effort the Victorians went to when it comes to public buildings!

It’s a cemetery in the middle of a busy intersection K Road & Symonds. Really!
Across from it restaurant, convenient store, hotel. It’s historical place, I was told. People go for a stroll 🚶🏻♀️ like a park.
