Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

We traveled up from Auckland whilst on holiday from Oz. We are so glad we did, what a beautiful place, the village was lovely and the surrounding country breathtaking. We tried some local wines and the highlight was the Manakana Oysters from the Green Shed nearly, easily the best oysters we have ever eaten.

We went for the Saturday morning Farmer's Market- not your usual farmers I must say- all sorts of exotic organic products (along with some not so exotic) in a setting befitting such a high end market. The little shopping village itself is charming with several restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops all around that also houses love very nice and equally... More

At only 45 mins-ish out of Auckland, Matakana Village and markets blow me away every time. You need to get here early, to find a park close enough to the farmers' market, but it is well worth it! There is always live music, great food and great produce. There is also a restaurant at the markets (which I believe uses... More

Just go there on a Saturday, a real gem in the region. Have visited at least 6 times and never bored and the food is tops.

Has to be said and done, been here on many a weekend and in the week to be fair. It has a lovely setting with the river to have a picnic at at the bottom of Matakana. Some lovely little boutique type shops in its square where they also hold the farmers market which is great. If you get the... More

WE have done numerous trips up to matakana from Auckland with our young family, as I have been collecting local art from a young artist who often has a stall at the local Sunday Matakana market. Not sure if they are on weekly or not, as I only tended to go when I knew my artist would be there. Lots... More

Cottage industry arts, crafts, food, beverages, Spray free fruit, vegetables, & live music. Sample the wines, listen to the artisans as they tell you how they smoke their garlic, or just sit by the river & contemplate. There are always the local shops too, organic ice cream, the art deco movie theatre & the historic pub across the road. There... More
