Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

Predictably overpriced for the visiting Aucklanders but neat nonetheless. Tasteful design and landscaping around the river and market, and the Public toilets on the highway corner are a complete standout. First equal dunnies in the nation I think - along with Kawakawa and the Hundertwasser special. How come these people in the north understand what others further south don't ?

Enjoyed the drive up to Matakana. Lunched at a cafe - good food & coffee - then walked down to browse the Market. I love looking at everything & the best part of market visits is everyone can move at their own speed. Intriguing knick-knacks (yes), antiques, recycled clothing (yes), plus art gallery selling works (almost). Impressed with natural remedies... More

Wow, what a cool place to visit on a Saturday! The markets are great, reasonable prices on most things. This place gives you a real holiday feeling with the variety of foods and local products for sale. The French breads and pastries are great and also the macadamia nuts. We will be back and next time will stay a night... More

A morning at the market with breakfast at the Matakana Kitchen is the best way to spend a Saturday before a walk along the beach at Omaha nearby.

Matakana is around an hour and half drive from Auckland. The village is a popular stop for locals ans tourist. Every Saturday they have a farmers market where local business come and exhibit their stock and sell. The food at the farmers market is also very good and is made with local produce.

we visited on a winter sunday and found it hard to find somewhere to park, can't imagine summer. lots of nice but expensive shops. must say, the usual friendly Kiwi was not in evidence, except in our lunch choice.

Matakana has a super cute Farmers Market set up for the Auckland Yuppies. We went in September but I was informed that there are a lot more stalls in Summer. They even had a Dog sitting service so you can stroll around freely while your pouch is taken care of. Just a short drive from the highway it's definatley worth... More
