Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

WE have done numerous trips up to matakana from Auckland with our young family, as I have been collecting local art from a young artist who often has a stall at the local Sunday Matakana market. Not sure if they are on weekly or not, as I only tended to go when I knew my artist would be there. Lots... More

Cottage industry arts, crafts, food, beverages, Spray free fruit, vegetables, & live music. Sample the wines, listen to the artisans as they tell you how they smoke their garlic, or just sit by the river & contemplate. There are always the local shops too, organic ice cream, the art deco movie theatre & the historic pub across the road. There... More

This is a quaint township and has some really neat markets over the weekend.....the setting itself is magical ad maybe I am biased...locals love it.... People from overseas go and live like a local and understand why NZ is the best country in the world, reduce your pace and breathe to enjoy the slow pace....some really neat shops/cafes as well... Wow!! If you haven't experienced the Matakana Village Market on a Saturday, well - you haven't really lived!! What a fantastic vibe. A huge variety of food and produce, live music and an awesome Rustic family atmosphere make for a huge mornings outing. Don't forget to try the Whitebait Fritters

Situated about 1 hour Nth of Auckland this sleepy hollow comes alive every Saturday with its Village Market. It has three great movie theatres with heaps of room between comfortable seats, you can even take your glass of wine in with you to have while watching the movie. There are a choice of several eating establishments including the local pub... More

We love coming up to Matakana, the markets on both Saturday and Sunday are great! It is worth staying the night to explore both days. We love getting the Saturday markets then heading off to Omaha beach for a bit or to the many Vineyards then back to the village for dinner at either the Vintry or MMK and then... More

We love Matakana. The shops are really quaint and stock all kinds of nicky nacky items as well as organic produce and there are various wine estates to visit.
