We attended the early service at this very nice Anglican Church in the Central Business District, near SkyTower. All persons greeted us as we walked into the building. Following the service we used a pamphlet to conduct a self guided tour. Pretty stained glass windows.

We came to St Matthew in the City for one of their Sunday afternoon concerts. The Church itself looks quite nice. It has a second-floor balcony area that overlooks the church. the stairway is on the far right as you enter. The sides is covered with a vaulted corridor which looks nice while walking under it. The church is quite big. We didn't get to look around that much as the orchestra was preparing around the back of the church.

St Matthew-in-the-City is an historic Anglican church that sits on the corner of Wellesley and Hobson Streets.

It is truly one of the most beautiful churches in Auckland and extremely popular as a wedding venue. It was constructed from stone in the neo-Gothic style.

The architect, John Pearson, was also responsible for other magnificent 19th century church buildings such as the imposing St Johns Cathedral, Brisbane and Truro Cathedral in England. St Matthews is unusual for Auckland as it is built from stone.

It has exquisite stained glass throughout, a beautiful sanctuary and high altar.

The church has eight bells in its tower and an active bell ringing group. The bells date back to the 1860s and were bought to New Zealand by Sarah Selwyn, the wife of the first Archbishop of New Zealand.

The church boasts a lovely lady chapel that has been transplanted from St Thomas' in Freemans Bay (a church that was demolished to make way for the motorway to the Harbour Bridge in the 1960s).

St Matthew-in-the-City is a liberal Anglican congregation and has been quite controversial in recent years with its stance on various social issues. It is closely aligned with the work of the Auckland City Mission, and Anglican social service that has a particular interest in working with the homeless. The Mission's headquarters are further along Hobson Street from St Matthew.

The Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity sits in the city fringe suburb of Parnell and St Matthew-in-the-City is one of two Anglican churches in the City. The other is St Pauls in Symonds Street located at the other end of Wellesley Street.

Services take place at 8am and 10am on a Sunday with communion on Wednesday at 12.30pm.

Special services are held throughout the year to coincide with particular festivals with full details on the church website.

If you want to take time out from the busy city, this church truly is an oasis of calm and a place of genuine beauty.

Beautiful gothic church, relevant sermon if you attend and if you like church music, wonderful interspersions by professional singers and the organist is also wonderfully accomplished. The venue is used for concerts. There is adjacent paid parking during business hours.

While I wouldn't suggest making this a central point of your sightseeing itinerary, if you happen to be walking by, this is a great location to stop for a moment of peace and quiet in the city. The stained glass is beautiful, especially if you visit on a sunny day. The pigmentation of the glass is deep enough that the light that shines through is richly colored. It reminded me slightly of the light that comes through the windows of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (although on a much smaller and less grand scale). Definitely worth a quick stop if you're passing by.

Great worship experience in this beautiful cathedral. The service was traditional with beautiful hymns sung by the choir accompanied by a great organist.

Every second month (for years) we have attended the great concerts of St Matthews Chamber Orchestra and always enjoyed the setting, windows and acoustics of this place.

We found this to be a surprisingly large church just off the heart of the city, and one block back from Sky Tower.

The church is free to enter and there is a donation box just inside the entry near the back pews for visitors to drop in a donation.

There is also an information guide at the back of the church which provides history and information on the church and the stained glass windows.

It's well worth stopping in here and admiring the church from both the outside and the inside.

A place of worship for a progressive christian community but also a focal point for the inner city with many cultural events held during the week. The music alone is outstanding with Michel Bell organist and composer extrodinaire and Dimitry Russov and The St Mathew's singers providing sublime sacred offerings a plenty.
