Found Auckland Free Walking Tours through google, in hopes of learning some quick facts about the city we were visiting. This tour fit the bill!
Our guide was Marty and he was incredibly knowledgeable and very entertaining. We had a great time learning about Auckland’s history, and he was always happy to answer any follow up questions people had. The tour doesn’t stray terribly far from the wharf area where you meet (it is a walking tour after all - wouldn’t be too practical to run around every inch of the city), so if you’re looking to explore other neighborhoods, it might be worth looking into something else. The tour ends near where it starts, so no concerns about anyone getting lost after we all broke off.
The tour lasted the full 2.5 hours but certainly didn’t feel like it!

We are glad you had such a great time with our fabulous guide Marty.
Marty has so much knowledge about Auckland's history, culture and lifestyle and he shares it in such an entertaining
way.
There's so much to discover in the inner city and our guides are also happy to recommend other areas to explore
depending on your interests.

50 people showed up on this Wednesday morning but the guides were completely prepared and split us into two groups. Curtis was our terrific guide, very knowledgable and kept the group moving so we could see the whole circuit in the 2.5 hours allotted. Lots of hidden alleys, local stories and Auckland knowledge during the tour. Even a secret garden up by the university that we would have never known about without Curtis. Also engaged and happy to help with ideas for anyone on their remaining stay in the city.
I gave him a “gift” of the same amount I paid for a walking tour in Melbourne and it was worth every penny.

Thanks for your great review.
We try and keep our tours personal and friendly so we often have extra guides so we can split a large group.
Curtis loves showing visitors hidden corners of the city you wouldn't find on your own and the secret garden is one of his specialties.
He also has great tips on other things to see and do in the city so we hope you had a chance to check those out later in your stay.

Auckland is a young city and there's not a ton of cool things to see but our guide Marty made the tour a delight. Between his funny stories and anecdotes and his friendly demeanor we passed almost three lovely hours walking around the city and learning about its history and secrets. Great tour and great tour guide.

Sarah gave us a really interesting guided tour of the city, with lots of great snippets of info. She was careful to make sure we could stand in the shade at most places where she gave a talk as it was a really hot day. I’d thoroughly recommend the walk as a great intro to Auckland.

We docked in Auckland overnight on a recent cruise, and were advised on board the ship that there was a free walking tour which would be departing at 10am. We were so glad we were able to take advantage of this tour, because it was absolutely wonderful. Our tour guide, Curtis, walked us to many of the city's sights and was full of information about Auckland and its history. It really was one of the best city tours we've ever been on! Highly recommended (and please tip well at the end, as the tour guides are all volunteers).

We learned SO much about Auckland and had a great time laughing at all of Marty’s jokes. He is super passionate about Auckland and share great insights about the country, city, and things to do! He said his background is in advertising but his humor and storytelling skills make him a perfect Tour Guide. Start your Auckland trip by journeying through Marty’s pathway and you’ll learn about the unique plants, animals, and history of this amazing country!

Our tour with Sara was a great introduction to Auckland city and some of the cultural aspects of New Zealand. In addition to the walking tour of the area, Sara shared knowledge of the flora and fauna, history, current events and finished the tour with a traditional song. Fantastic tour and a beautiful introduction to Auckland.

Our guide Sarah was wonderful! She was very friendly, and very knowledgeable. She told us the story of the Maoris arriving in NZ and the eventual arrival of European settlers. We walked to Albert Park, University of Auckland, saw various historical sites, and very importantly, she recommended a few websites and activities around the city. It was a great start to our visit to Auckland. Highly recommend it!

The tour was truly great. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a good crash course in New Zealand history as well as interesting details about the city. They even brought sun cream in case anyone had forgotten. One of the best city walking tours I’ve done and it’s free, that’s just amazing. (There is a voluntary donation but we didn’t feel pressured at all to make any donations as can be the case in other places.)

Our team love making the walk special for every walker and we are glad to hear you had a wonderful time.

Is this walk suitable for a very active 80 year old? Mum is very physically able but could find hills a bit challenging? We will be walking in March

Hi, I found it an easy walk and don't really recall many hills. The good thing about it is that the guide stops quite frequently to tell you more stories and it gives you a chance (if needed) to catch your breath. It was quite a hot day when we were there but I didn't find it too hard; I would imagine March would be a little cooler. Hope you and your mum enjoy NZ.
On which days does the tour take place?

I think it's most every day, rain or shine, with a couple of exceptions for holidays. I'd check their web site to get the most up to date info.

At Britomart Place which is very close to where you begin at the Ferry Building (about 100 metres). The guides will help you find your way to where you need to go at the end of the tour.
We will becoming into Auckland on a cruise on March 1, what are our options to store our luggage during the tour. Afterwards we will leave for the airport.
Thank you,
Bruce

I noticed that the Fuller's (boat tour operator) kiosk has a baggage storage facility. It is around the corner from where the tour starts. It may be $$$. The shop prices nearby are outrageous.

Depending on guide quality (they are usually great, some are outstanding!), we give between $10 and $20 per person. Not sure how much we gave in Auckland but it was a good tour. We have not had a bad free tour.

Do you have any free tour in Spanish?
172louise
Auckland Central, New Zealand2 contributions
Sorry -at this stage our tours are only in English.Sometimes we get native Spanish speakers who turn up for the walk and are happy to translate what our guides are saying if needed.
This can work well but there is no guarantee this will happen on any particular day.
