- happyopenmindedtravellerThe Netherlands306,464 contributionsA very nice place to take a walk and a yoghurt ice cream! After our lunch, my brother drove us all down to the popular Mission Bay Beach. The weather being so pleasant today with such a lovely sea breeze, the beach was pretty crowded during this Sunday afternoon. It was really quite a pleasant experience, to see so many locals having such a great time on the Mission Bay Beach. We all ended up having very delicious yoghurt ice creams in a nearby yoghurt ice cream cafe.Visited February 2020Traveled with familyWritten February 15, 2020

What a lovely location, interesting views that change by the minute, sandy beach with grassed area.
Bar's, cafés, restaurants and shops to visit.
Also shaded park with trees if required.
Very nice and popular on a nice day.

Ultimate summer destination- if you're near the Auckland CBD. Amazing waterfront views onto the blue blue waters and perfect place to watch for beautiful sunsets. I'm sure the sunrise would be equally spectacular though haven't had the opportunity to see one just yet. A small stretch of sand for the beach experience as the water isn't the greatest for swimming. A cool and iconic water fountain in the nearby grassy park area. A long pathway to walk, run, bike, whatever takes your fancy right alongside the ocean. I know they hire out bikes in the summer- not just single riders but cool tandem ones as well. Definitely been on my list to-try for a while.
They have a great promenade with cafes and restaurants at the end of the extensive stroll path, from all ethnicities as well as desserts for after- if you're around for a meal time. A great laid back feel with picturesque views- perfect for a chilled day out with kids or friends, a good meal or a night out.

I caught the bus to Mission Bay beach (from the bus centre in auckland) and took about 15-20 mins to get to this place. As previous comment, I am not sure if it is a worth going just to visit this place unless you want to go swimming with your kids. There is a nice walk to the M.J Savages Memorial Park from Mission Bay where you can see Auckland from the top of the hill. Get a takeaway fish and chips and sit down on the beach and relax..

Follow the signs to Mission Bay as you drive out of Auckland. Stay as close to the coast as you can and go as far as Achilles Point look-out (just past St. Heliers.) St. Heliers is an elegant town with lovely restaurants. We had a great meal at La Vista , across from the beach. (Next door is Anna Belle, which won various awards, but we ate only one dinner that night.)

A few minutes drive from centre of Auckland with lots of wonderful restaurants. Some Art Deco architecture.

Close proximity to CBD of Auckland. Full of activities, Nice palace to swim and surf. Eateries and cafe aplenty. Park is good for family and picnic.

Good views and very centrally located. But it can get very busy and it's not the best spot for swimming.

This restaurant is in a fantastic location, opposite the beach in St Heliers. The interior is nicely designed, and lit by oversized battery operated candles.
On the evening we visited (Saturday), a duo were singing Spanish style music, and this provided great atmosphere.
The restaurant has changed hands recently, and this led 8 of us locals to book at table for a meal out. The menu has a Spanish influence, with a selection of Tapas. However, the owner does not appear to have any spanish origin, neither did the chefs. This was reflected in the meals.
Two of us had scallops with cauliflower puree and and gin and tonic sauce for a starter, (not exactly Spanish sounding!). The scallops were neither pan friend and caramelised, nor seasoned. The cauliflower puree and sauce had turned into a runny sludge, and the gin and tonic flavour was not in evidence at all. Calamari were reasonable, a charcuterie plate was fine, and spare ribs definitely microwaved to a roof of the mouth scorching temperature.
The mains took some considerable time to arrive, perhaps an hour, and when they did, the sauces on all meat dishes were the same, other than for the accents, such as mustard. The sauces were very strong and salty gravies, with an unidentifiable meat background, somewhat the consistency of varnish. My fillet was barely luke warm, and I sent this back. The same steak was returned to me, and I suspect that this had been microwaved. It was steaming on the outside, and was the toughest fillet I have ever experienced. Others sent cold baskets of fries back, and no one raved about their meal, including those that ordered a traditional paella.
Two desserts were ordered, an affogato (you can't really get that wrong!), and a sticky date pudding. Most of this was left, as those that ordered it found the dates gritty and unpleasant. I suspect that they hadn't been soaked in hot water initially.
Other than the food, the service was not great. It took 2 requests for water, and we eventually got this 25 minutes after the last people arrived at the table. The restaurant wasn't busy when we first arrived, and this is a small restaurant with 3 staff on the night we visited, yet drinks sometimes didn't arrive. When a reminder was issued for one glass of wine, 2 glasses of the same wine arrived within minutes, though only 1 had been ordered.
The owner appeared very concerned that people were enjoying the food, one can only question her knowledge of Spanish food, and indeed of the restaurant industry.

I had a couple of hours to spare so caught a bus from the CBD to Mission Bay. Quite a small place but has a nice beach, plenty of places to sit and people watch, several good cafes and the bus ride travels along the coastline offering really good views of the city.

We visit often as we stay near the city. It's dredged sand so not as nice as the beaches on the north shore. We have never swam here, just been for picnics or read in the grass area. Good selection of restuatants and fish and chips shop nearby. Good wAterfountain for the kids to play in and BBQ areas if u bring ur own gas BBQ.
