We visited this one the same day as Karekare Beach which is the more interesting and less crowded - and also where filming for The Piano took place. Of course swimming and fishing at either is to be regarded as potentially dangerous unless all cautions are observed. But lovely spots to stroll and watch sunsets.

The day we visited there were huge waves and only a few people in the water being carefully watched by a lifeguard. This beach is good to visit at low tide so you can go into the caves. Also nice for children when the tide is out as the middle steam of water is very shallow and easy for children... More

Such a great beach to visit - true west coast wildness at it's finest. We had a nice time exploring and swimming here.

Great for walking dogs and enjoying the wild west coast. Make sure you swim between the flags and only when the lifeguards are on patrol. Take time to go to the southern end of the beach and look at the volcanic features and the cave, then around to Waitakere and O'Neil's beaches to the north of Bethells. Do NOT leave... More

Fabulous wild west coast beach only 45 minutes from central city. Low tide options include rock hopping around the island in the middle or going in the huge cave at the left hand end of the beach and then continuing around the rock ledge to a secluded beach around the headland (definite low tide only). Or turn right over the... More

What an amazing beach. Wild and rugged, black sand with hidden caves and amazing views. Went here as part of my Xena warrior princess pilgrimage tour of NZ! My kids were NOT looking forward to this day of the trip where their crazy mother visited important Xena filming locations BUT, they loved it!Head to the northern end of the beach... More

I will admit that our families love of Bethells/ Te Henga goes way back, be warned it is wild and the water can be deceiving, it's dangerous as with all the west coast beaches of Auckland. If you have spent an hour on your surfboard or swimming on the East coast you need lots more practice before considering the west... More

We initially went to this beach to go to the sand-dunes + Lake Wainamu, but what i didn't realise is that if you want to access these places you need to park closer to the little bridge just before you reach the Bethell's bridge carpark. If you're coming from Bethell's beach, apparently you need to stop just before the bridge... More

Dear Madam/Sir, RE: Bethells beach is one of the finest beaches around Auckland City. This place has some of the greatest tourist attraction points such as backwaters, caves and walking tracks. The sand is black like gold in colour and has a rare texture. The caves are an attraction here carved into Hills. Parking is available and bathroom and shower... More

I've been to beaches all over the world, and Bethells is one of the most memorable and special yet. The wet, black sand creates a huge mirror for the sky, and the beach seems to go on for miles. There are sand dunes, caves and mini beaches to explore too. The drive to the beach is wonderful too - you... More
