- Christina CCoquitlam, Canada6,386 contributionsElegant Ferry BuildingThe ferry building is in the Auckland Central Business District on the Auckland waterfront that you cannot miss. From the cruise ship we can see this elegant brown sandstone, brick and granite building with a clock tower clearly. After we disembarked, we spent time to explore this building. The lower level of the terminal was very busy, containing shops and cafes. After 100 years it is still looking its best to serve the locals and tourists. Happy Travelling!Visited March 2019Written January 10, 2020
- Cliff JLondon, United Kingdom2,128 contributionsAuckland LandmarkThe Ferry Building on the water front is an iconic building and contains several restaurants and cafes overlooking the ferry terminal where you can book tickets. Plenty of seating to just sit and eat an ice-cream while watching the ferries come and go. There is a lot of road/building work by the front of the building at the moment, so not very photogenic from that side!Visited February 2020Written March 27, 2020
- PBPGYorkshire, United Kingdom5,973 contributionsLooks stunningThe Edwardian building was built in 1912 of sandstone and brick and is very impressive. Most of the ferry business is carried out in the newer building, this building has shops and cafes/restaurants. Well worth a 30-minute wander around.Visited November 2022Written November 22, 2022

Its also a port where you will see cruise ships docked. The Ferry Builing has a new and old part. The Old Building is constructed of sandstone in the Baroque style and isdated to 1912. Its a great spot to walk around and there are several retaurants and a place to get some Italian Gellato.Visited December 2022Written January 24, 2023

It had 4 clocks high up near the steeple facing each direction. The building was red brick with yellow accents - a glorious colour against the blue of the water and the skyscrapers. Taking advantage of the sea views they had a restaurant up on the first level. You can’t miss it if you’re down near the wharf.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 9, 2023

The regular ferries are off to one side and you can use the AT Hop Metro card for these. Excursion ferries depart from the other side of the building.Visited June 2022Written June 13, 2022
- A1NomadicCalifornia87 contributionsHistoric buildingThis is a nice looking historic building on the waterfront. There are plenty of tour offices, ferry ticketing and tourist information at or near the building. The gelato place was worth mentioning. We were there late Nov and there was road restrictions all over the place, due to a mass transit construction ( I think) and it was a mess. If you walk further down you will see some upscale restaurants worth visiting, right by the tourist info office.Visited November 2019Written December 7, 2019

Some wonderful food options are in the building but make sure you visit one before you tag in to the transit part. The Ferry Cafe on the other side is consistently bad. The staff don’t know what they stock, and don’t seem to care. For example “Spicy chai” turns out to be sweet, we’ve been told they didn’t have food which was clearly visible in the cabinet, and toasted sandwiches come out half-cooked. Stay away.Visited April 2018Traveled as a coupleWritten April 27, 2018

The Ferry Building is the core of the ferry network that connects the City with the outlying Auckland suburbs and islands and is located at the end of Queen Street and a few steps away from Britomart. It is an Edwardian Baroque building and was designed by Alex Wiseman and completed in 1912, it is an iconic structure along Auckland's waterfront and contrasts greatly with the high concentration of modern high skyscrapers in CBD area.

Over 100 years old, the Ferry Building anchors the north end of Queen Street and serves as the hub for ferry travel to Devonport and a few other destinations. Shops are located at street level.

Heading to Devonport? Waiheke? Half Moon Bay? Great Barrier Island (on the holiday weekends in the summer)? Well this is the place to go!
The old ferry building is a historic building and houses the best gelato shop in Auckland and the newly opened Botswana Butchery. If travelling to Waiheke on holiday weekend, make sure to get there early as the ferry can be quite crowded or even sell out!
The Auckland Ferry Terminal was built in 1912 and holds a Category I New Zealand Historic Places rating. Designed in Edwardian Baroque style, the building is absolutely beautiful and well-known by all Aucklanders, regardless of whether they have ever caught a ferry.
Even if the architecture wasn't as stunning as it is, the building is hard to miss due to its burnt orange coloured exterior. It grabs your attention - though this is probably handy for tourists when it comes to locating the building!
The location of the Ferry Terminal is between two of Auckland's main wharfs, so is perfectly situated for commuters, as ferries to Devonport, Northcote Point, Waiheke and other nearby destinations depart frequently.

I suggest taking the ferry to Waiheke from Half Moon Bay, which is about 20 kms south east of Auckland CBD. There’s plenty of parking at the area but gets filled up pretty quickly on weekdays.
