- KenVicLeeHuntington Beach, California2,091 contributionsGun Placements Protecting the HarborWe stopped here as part of a tour with Time Unlimited Tours. We had previously heard a story about the gun placements when enjoying the Fullers 360 Harbor Tour. It was great to see the bunkers up close and to have the perspective overlooking Auckland's harbor. For safety reasons you can't see all the defense works that went on here but we were told there were tunnels built by prison labor during the Russian Scare of 1885. A very interesting and, to us from the U.S., little known piece of history.Visited February 2020Written April 9, 2020
- Michael F88 contributionsAll that money spent chasing Russians - and they never cameOk, the view is outstanding, the beauty quite remarkable. But its also worth getting into the history of the place - fear of Russians to start with... and to think, the first two Boeing aircraft ever made are lost some where inside all those tunnels.Visited November 2019Written February 14, 2020
- platypus150Melbourne, Australia27,232 contributionsThe ViewsIt is really all about the views. You have a good look down on the port of Devonport, the beach at Cheltenham, across to Rangitoto island, and South to the city of Auckland. There are some historic items from the naval battery and the walk up is not too hard. You can drive a car up to the top, which you cannot do from Mt Victoria. There are interesting old houses nearby, so I think walking is bestVisited June 2022Written June 13, 2022

We parked at the upper car park then headed towards the South Battery. There is a map of the hill and you can go in any direction. As one local out walking his dog said ‘you can’t get lost’! The path is mowed grass and follows the hill around in a circle. Lots of stops at old war installations, beautiful views of Devonport, Mt Victoria and the Auckland skyline. I was surprised we spent 2 hours here! Such a nice break from the city.

The walk was incredibly beautiful. The park was very easy to find and offered a great view of Auckland. Quiet and peaceful. Great place for families and kids. Near to shops and great eats. The New World grocery store is huge there and offers many great selections. The shop nearby have the best prices that I have ever seen all over New Zealand. I shop in Auckland and Bay if Islands. Devonport had the best deals for the exact same thing.
Tourist should grab a HOP card from the grocery stores, load it up as you go. If you don’t use your balance within 60 days, they put the money back on the card that you used to purchase the travel credits. It works on bus, trains and ferries. You will save a fortune.
Trust me, I’m a local.

North Head is a lovely place to wander around. You can look at the Gun Placements and the magnificent views of Auckland. If you are lucky you may meet Daisy, the resident feline of North Head. Well worth taking a picnic.

Went there after 10 years and it was as if time had stood still. The same beautiful views, easy walks and a great place for a picnic with the family. Lots of history in the museum and a great place for the kids to run around. Beautifully kept grounds.

We always come here. An easy day, picnic with a view, play in the low tide water, explore the history and slide down the slopes. Blimen windy on a winter day but fun for all.

Lovely walk and views of harbour. Interesting tunnels. Poor rating due to getting parked car robbed with smashed window. My poor niece and newphews got bags taken right before heading to airport. Luckily no passports or wallets were taken as we carried these but totally tarnished the great trip they had to NZ and NZ image. Medication, a child’s phone, some souvenirs, travel bits, and clothing stolen. Hugely disappointed for the lack of cameras on parking areas which could easily have cameras here. Called security company on front gate and even though it says monitored, it’s only a sign to try and deter issues. Visitors beware!
Also not a garbage bin in sight so did see litter along the walk.

If you are on the Auckland waterfront and look over the water to Devonport you will see 2 hills Mt Victoria and the one to the left at the very end of the North Shore, North Head.
An easy walk to the summit via Cheltenham Beach which is by the way a beautiful beach with stunning views of Rangitoto Island.
The bunkers up the hill were built because of the fear of a Russian invasion believe it or not.
Also great views of the Coromandel and Waiheke and some of the other Hauraki Gulf Islands and of Auckland City and the East Coast Bays from the summit.

I am taking my grandmother she really wants to see North head, please let me know how hard the walk up there is. Would she handle it if we went really slow?

Sorry for the delay answering. It is a bit of a steep walk up, but there is car access. Beautiful views from the top so well worth the effort and time either way.
