- Barry WLeighton Buzzard, United Kingdom188 contributionsTake the train and enjoy the walk and viewShort and cheap train journey from britomart to green lane station, about ten min walk gets you into the park and then loads of different ways to walk to the top, easy even for pensioners like us. Great views, could do with a board telling you what was where at the top but otherwise a great place to visit. The oldest wooden house in the north island was great and made me realise how lucky we are to live in a country where even the local church was built 750 years ago. Take the train and visit, well worth itVisited January 2020Written January 23, 2020
- WoodlandsMikeThe Woodlands, Texas215 contributionsClimb Worth the ViewsThis hill was once the site of a Maori fort, the largest fortifications in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also a sacred site and burial ground. The steep climb to the top allows you 360 views of greater Auckland, the city, harbor and burbs. The reward is worth the 25 minute climb.Visited February 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten February 24, 2020
- LeahAuckland, New Zealand47 contributionsFantastic viewOne Tree Hill is a good place to visit anytime of the day. You can have the view of the city which looks so pleasant during night with the city lights. It's a challenging walk going up there but it is worth it. It's just a little bit windy though so prepare to bring jacket during cold days.Visited May 2020Written June 24, 2020

There are a few paths through the long grass and over the paddocks that we followed on the way down. There us a cafe and a playground in Cornwall park as well. A great free activity to do with it without kids.Visited January 2020Traveled with familyWritten January 20, 2020

You use to be able to drive to the top but now it’s a walk only to the top site. Sadly, our one friend couldn’t walk that far. There is a historical plaque about half way up the hill and several at the top of the hill. Make sure you read these signs to learn about the history of this area. Being one of the highest point, this lookout offers 360 degree views of entire Auckland. There are plenty of parking on the hill. The one nearest the peak is about 10 minutes walk. The hill has beautiful park and trees all over. You can have a stroll, bring a picnic mat and sit under tree and enjoy a book or just merely relax and feel the nature. You can bring a bike or scooter as well. Have a drinking bottle handy so you can relenosh your water on nearby drinking fountains too.Visited March 2022Traveled with friendsWritten March 24, 2022
- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia13,196 contributionsOn top of an extinct volcanoOne Tree Hill did at one time have one tree, but no longer. Attempts have been made to restore the tree, without much success. The hill is 182 metres tall (600 feet). The volcano erupted some 60,000 years ago, today you can see both Auckland harbours from the top of the hill. The obelisk on top of the hill commemorates the Maori people. Taking a car is advisable, it's a steep climb.Visited November 2020Written November 30, 2020

Dont go expecting to see the tree - it was vandalised and had to be cut down. You can drive or walk up the hill, although parking was a bit tight at the top! Much better to walk up and enjoy the view - but only if you're fit!!!! Worth it for the view and who can go to Auckland without visiting one tree hill?

Our rental car was broken into at the parking lot near the summit of One Tree Hill. We lost all our backpacks containing our cash, credit cards and passports in a very short span of 15 minutes while walking to the summit for photo taking. Apparently, it is a hot spot for car break-in, but there is no police car posted as deterrance. So if you are there, watch out for cars parking beside you especially with motor running and always take your valuables with
you. We have been traveling from South Island to North Island with no concern with safety
and security until we arrived at Auckland, our last stop. We have been caught off-guard.
Locals has mentioned that Auckland, being the biggest city of New Zealand, is not as safe
as other parts of the country. We enjoyed our trip and loved this country, hope it is only an
isolated case which is not going to deter us from coming back.
However, we must say that the staff at the information centre at the hill has been very
helpful. Two ladies ( Annie and Philipa) at the centre have provided us with a back office,
internet and LD phone for reporting to police, contacting embassies and credit card
companies. They have done their utmost to assist us in sorting out our problems which could turn out to be a much bigger nightmare. Our greatest appreciation for their care and helps at time of needs.

Nestled in the middle of 200 hectares is one tree hill, One of the many jewels Auckland has to offer. One of the the few cities the world where you can see two harbours from either coasts. Looking to the south you can see the hunia ranges, looking to the west the manukau heads and wiatakeres ranges, look north the city and the magnificent rangitoto Island and if you look east you can see the coromandel .Best enjoyed in the summer bring along some meat and use one of the many free bbq's scattered around Cornwall park or bring along a picnic pick a spot and enjoy. It would be criminal not to come to Auckland and enjoy what we take for granted.

I heard that One Tree Hill has recently been made car-free. I'm traveling with my elder parents. Can I take a cab/bus to the top so that they don't have to walk more than 15-20 mins?

Hi Harsh, yes the summit has been made vehicle free in line with the historic and cultural sensitivity of the area also safety for those walking and sharing the road. However if your parents have their senior or disability cards with they can get access from the barrier . You will need to have these with you though and it may be possible to check with the park before you go to ensure that they will be accepted .The summit is well worth the walk up and one of the best free vantage points.

Driving it's about 3k from gate to summit. Walking is a bit shorter and a gentle steepness at the end obviously. My daughter and niece ran both ways but stopped off at the coffee van on way back. Scrounging that off me. Choose a nice day though.
