This no cost gallery was a wonderful way to enjoy art for a few hours on a rainy day. The Maori Portraits showcase the work of Gottfried Lindauer, and were exceptional. Community customs were shared through some of the paintings, and the artist's painting technique was shown. We had a quick bite to eat at the Cafe (the toasted date... More

I came away from the art gallery convinced I had missed something. Art is a matter of personal taste of course and the line which appears to be taken here is that anything non-European or contemporary, no matter how worthy or unworthy, should be displayed in a vast amount of space so that the visitor can appreciate it (if there's... Everyone with either architectural or artist interest must see this gallery. World Class. Take the kids. There is always an imagination room for them and they are very welcome in the main gallery. Shop. Greta place to pick up highend New Zealand gifts.

While many Auckland activities involve being outside, if you are forced in by weather, or have a some time to kill around the U of Auckland/Albert Park area, stop in the award winning Art Gallery. The architecture is first rate, avoiding that stuffy "museum" feel, and has a bit of whimsy to it, which kids can appreciate. The Gallery displays... More

I'm not a "paintings museum" kinda-person,so maybe that is why I gave it a 4 star (out of 5). What I didn't really like about it was that in theexpositionof the Maori people's paintings there was one which was not "true to life" in that the painter gave her an "afro hair" and I am more of the "reality type... I enjoyed wandering looking at the different styles of art, which is a lot, for people who know the difference in the various styles will find it very enjoyable

Whatever's your artistic preferences you will find something to appeal to your tastes in here - and most likely some art which will not appeal. All is well displayed and if you are not familiar with the gallery you will be surprised by the novelty of some of the pieces displayed. Two hours is recommended.

Very nice building well designed but the contemporary works exposed are globally uninteresting and little creative, can we call it art?
