- Terese W19 contributionsVery interesting! Good value! We had a rainy afternoon to fill before our flight and chose to visit the Maritime Museum. We got much more than we expected seeing hundreds of boats and hearing their stories. We also were struck by the story of Peter Blake and the emigration stories.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 2, 2023
- Andreea GSanta Cruz de Tenerife, Spain296 contributionsQuite interestingIt was quite interesting to learn about the history of Māori navigation as well the journeys that took to the discovery of the islands. My favorite part was the Immigration section, quite emotional and life changing. We didn’t care at all about the yachting/speed boat section. We also filled in a questionnaire when we exited… quite strange and irrelevant questions and extremely long process, took around 10 minutesVisited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2023
- Michael FAudubon, Minnesota37 contributionsGreat museum and a wonderful ride on an old sailing ship.We were curious about the museum so we checked it out. Tourists pay for admission but, for a very reasonable price, you can add a one hour ride on a sailing ship. At the time of this writing, it was $30usd to do both! Great value! The museum has three areas; Sailing history for early Maori people, sailing and settlement for Europeans, and then a world cup history. All of them were very well done and really interesting. Then we got on an older ship with sails a took a trip around the bay. The volunteers were wonderful and fun to talk with. We got to help raise the sails and we moved fast. We had so much fun! We highly recommend taking time to check it out!Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 21, 2023
- BrunoNottingham, United Kingdom193 contributionsFascinating Maritime History museum in Auckland. We spent over 3 hours at this fascinating presentation of Auckland & New Zealand’s maritime history on a rainy day. Maori & settlers experiences are covered, along with a contemporary gallery on the Americas cup. Harbour tours are offered on vintage boats, for an additional charge, but not appropriate for us in view of the weather.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 23, 2023
- ND FVancouver, Canada565 contributionsA lot of history and great displays to view.Great location along the waterfront promenade. Was pleasantly surprised by the size of the museum and the expanse of displays. Entry is free if you’re an Auckland resident. Otherwise, it was $24 NZ for adult entry. Don’t recall the family or senior rates as I went in as a single.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 3, 2024
- betteskidBoston, Massachusetts1,326 contributionsVery Nice MuseumWe stopped at this museum during our recent stay in Auckland. We enjoyed the museum, especially the sections related to the early history of the Maori and their boast and relationship to the sea. The section on immigration to New Zealand was also fascinating. There was a large display covering yachting and yacht racing as well. Everything was well-displayed and nicely labelled. I would recommend adding this to your itinerary in Auckland if you can.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 16, 2024
- napavalleydinerYountville, California79 contributionsGood museum with interesting exhibitsWe had not planned to go to this museum, but were walking in the area and decided to check it out. This is a really well-done museum covering a variety of topics relating to the sea. One of our favorites was the section on immigrants from the UK and the immense hardships they survived for a better life. Another favorite was about the America's Cup and the film about Sir Peter Blake. Makes you appreciate the work involved in yacht racing.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 25, 2024
- JanetSmith95Nantwich, United Kingdom245 contributionsExcellent museumWe visited here during our stay in Auckland. So much to see in the museum and the harbour cruise on the ted Ashby was also excellent. Great crew with lots of information delivered in an amusing manner. - John GSaint Georges-super-Ely, United Kingdom82 contributionsIf sailing is your thing it’s for youStarts off a bit underwhelming but gets better as you go. The rocking room of an early cabin is a neat idea. There are lots of short videos and interactive screens to keep most of us entertained and educated, but two at least are too long. One has a running time of 48 mins and another 80 mins. I have no doubt that Peter Blake was a remarkable Kiwi, but how many visitors will sit through an 80 minute tribute? All in all though I spent 2 hours there and I don’t really like sailing!Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 10, 2024

A good selection of stands to look at going back the early days right up to the current time. You will need a good few hours here to see it all.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 9, 2024

Located in the main Port area this museum has a wide and varied range of exhibits. Give yourself a couple of hours to take it all in. Additional boat trips are available at additional cost.

Cold, wet day pushed us towards the museum for what we thought would be an hour or so visit. We left 41/2 hours later having been fascinated with sailing and nautical history. It is well done in the displays being informative but not arduous to read, with many interactive. Its main focus is on sailing and a lot about America's Cup and other sailing events but its presentation is very educational. A fascinating documentary film on the Whitbread around the world race. All in all a well-spent morning and a place that is worth a visit.

This is a very enjoyable outing. The Ted Ashby is a lovely vessel and I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. All the Maritime Museum staff are most welcoming - from the reception attendant to the crew on board. There is a raincoat available for passengers and I recommend you take it, if you haven’t brought your own - even on a fine day it can get breezy on the harbour. There is a very occasional splash of seawater also. I was fascinated with how the ship operated.
At all times the crew were all totally professional and respectful. I found them to be considerate of me (I am old!) and made sure I was at ease throughout the journey. They ask passengers to help hoist the sails - I had a concern about having to participate with that, but they were very respectful of me from that point of view. They also readily answered my questions and made me feel most welcome.
Well done and thank you to everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

An absolutely unmissable museum. There is so much to do (and it's free to Aucklanders!). We enjoyed our guided tour, and the special America's Cup Tour, so much that we returned a week later to watch the fabulous Maori Cultural Performance (unmissable - catch it while it's on!) and sail out into the harbour on the beautiful Ted Ashby. There's also a stunning Photography Exhibition on at the moment. The story of the Polynesian settlers is brilliantly told and the boats and other artefacts on display are fascinating. We also particularly enjoyed the recreation of what it was like to sail to NZ from Europe in years gone by - it's horrifying! Well worth a visit.

The Maritime Museum on the Auckland waterfront was outstanding as was the whole waterfront area.We spent 2 or more days on the waterfront and could not get enough. Restaurants , Team New Zealand America's Cup headquarters, marvelous harbor, yachts like you have never seen before. The Museum was definitely a highlight.A lot of road construction so give yourself extra time and cabs were great.

We had a wonderful hour of sailing on the Auckland Harbour with your crew who were knowledgeable and professional in their duties. The museum had areas covering history, culture and everything in between. Hands on activities also caters to a wide range of age groups.

We were in Auckland for a few days before starting out on another biking/hiking/kayaking trip with Backroads, a US-based adventure company. This museum caught our attention and, after paying under $60 US for the both of us found ourselves in an amazing museum with a one hour sailing excursion in the harbor. Now, as it turns out, there was no WIND for the sailing..but the boat had an engine and about 40 other people and I enjoyed a nice tour of the Auckland Harbor, big bridge, etc. The museum itself is amazing….it takes you from a LONG way back in local history all the way up to the America’s Cup races. For the money spent this was an excellent day adventure and…if you walk slow…you will enjoy, learn and absorb more information than you ever thought possible. it’s an easy walk from any of the piers as well as downtown. There are also a number of local bars/restaurants that you can enjoy; the museum ticket allows you to come and go as you please all day long. This is a “must do” if you are in Auckland.

My wife and I spent four hours touring this marvelous museum. The diverse exhibits featured several aspects of the New Zealand maritime history including the sailing craft of the indigenous people, the arrival of the Europeans by ship including the immigrant experience, the evolution of multiple and varied maritime vessels in the whaling, timber, and coastal economies, navigation, and the more recent America’s Cup sailing competition featuring the glorious efforts of the New Zealand teams led by Sir Peter Blake. There are interactive exhibits and activities for the kids. This is a great museum activity for the whole family.

Located on Auckland harbour is the New Zealand Maritime Museum. A look into the Polynesian history around the area to cutting edge racing yachts, include yachts that competed in the America's Cup. It shows the stories that shaped New Zealand as a sea faring nation.
Lots of displays of historical sea craft, up to modern day technology. Don't miss out on the firing of the cannon.
$20 admission fee very reasonable, and you can easily spend several hours looking at all of the exhibitions. Great for everyone.

North Island: If you plan to start in Bay of Islands, take the shuttle flight (50 minutes) instead of van transfer (4-5 hours). I stayed in Paihia. Take tour to Cape Reinga (full day). Visit Russell & Kauri Puketi forest. I hired a local taxi for the forest & drive local area through the information center Paihia. You can book the Cape on line. Be sure to visit the Waitangi Treaty Estate. Auckland: Maritime Museum, lots of restaurants around the area. Going South: Waimangu Volcanic Valley, Hobbiton Movie set, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Franz Josef Glacier & stay in Hokitika. lots of Art shops. Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point. Tour around Christchurch. Wellington: Cable car to the top & walk back through the gardens. Don’t miss the history at the Roxi theatre and National Museum. The Anzac wing is amazing. The whole museum is very well done with lots for everyone in the family. Hope you have a good trip

Looking at your website, I can see your admission prices, but I cannot find a mechanism that allows me to advance purchase tickets online. Can that be done, or do you prefer people to just walk in? We are 4 adults from outside the Auckland region.

Hi Mike, apologies for the delay in our response, we didn't get a notification about this question. At present we don't take online bookings system for general entry for the public, just for harbour sailings as they can sell out. General admission tickets are always available at the front desk up until 4pm each day which is the last entry time for the museum.

Lots of great advice here, but just to add - if you do decide to drive you can actually park in Downtown Carpark opposite the Museum and buy a discounted $4.50 parking voucher from the Museum ticket desk. This will give you four hours of parking which should be plenty of time for your visit!
