The Glenbrook Vintage Railway is certainly the best preserved railway in the North Island and competes well with those found in the South Island and overseas. It will appeal to railway enthusiasts and family groups. I recommend an outbound trip from Glenbrook on an early train, explore Waiuku before having lunch, then returning on the stopping train in the afternoon.... More

We did the trip to Waiuku on the steam train with Diana as the engine. An authentic journey into the past for grandparents of our age as we recalled childhood train journeys and soot in the eyes and nose. The weekend we went was Lego Day with a working Lego train in one of the carriages on the train and... More

On a wet day in South Auckland rode the rails to Waiuku behind a chuffing fully restored tank steam locomotive. The volunteers have done truly amazing work on bringing this railway alive. Like stepping back into the 1920's. An included stop at their locomotive workshops shows a line up of locomotives both in running order and undergoing restoration work. A... More

Did a trip on the steam train as part of a tour group. Some of the group were able to travel up front with the driver for part of the trip - they all enjoyed that! It is a short trip in vintage carriages(even an open carriage), Stopped at the workshop on the way back to see other engines and... More

There are some great days put on by the railway. Go on the Thomas days which happen a few times every year and you will not regret it if you have children. It is always really busy, but on those days, it has bouncy castles, buses etc. On a normal day, the train to Waiuku and then do a walk... More

This was a great experience. The staff were friendly and everything was well organised. We took off on the train journey and had the choice of inside carriages or out on the open carriage. The trip was fun and we were able to stop whilst they changed the engine around and take some awesome photos. Great fun for all ages.... More

Took the kids & parents on a Sunday afternoon. Had lunch in Waiuku & then boarded the train there. Great to stop at the maintenance yard for a walk around. The train ride is fantastic for young & old. Plenty of indoor & outdoor viewing areas. Good drive to Waiuku as well.

So obviously my preschooler loves trains - blame Thomas for that! But I found it great myself. Really friendly staff, lots of attractions, including workshop. Old luggage. Can sit in the open carriage just behind the engine. If you are interested in history or only remotely in steam trains this one is for you. Pricing reasonable.

This is something that everyone with an interest in old locomotives has to do. It is really well organized. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour for the return trip which involves getting to see the locomotive uncoupled and changed ends on the train and stops at the workshops where you can see other vintage locomotives in the process...
