I'm 61 years old, and never thought I'd be bungy jumping at my age, but there I was up on that platform looking down at the water.
Because I had bungy'ed before, they allowed me to not have the cord attached to my ankles but instead to my waist so I could do a running off the platform bungy. It was scary, but oh so satisfying.
These guys really take safety seriously and so just take the plunge. You will never feel so alive in your life!

I'm a wimp. Like, why would someone willingly risk their lives by throwing themselves off a bridge? But, I knew if l left New Zealand (the home of bungee jumping - or "bungy" jumping as they spell it down there, so forgive me in advance if my autocorrect chooses to stay with the "ee" spelling), without having done it, that a small part of me would regret my decision.
Since I was only staying in Auckland for my brief New Zealand adventure, the closest (and probably only) option was AJ Hackett's Auckland Bridge Bungy. Actually, the fact that it was so close to downtown Auckland was probably the only reason I had even heard about it, and therefore why I couldn't justify to myself not doing it. I actually changed my flight time back to the states (from 1:30pm to 7:30pm), just so that I could do this. Once you book, there are no refunds, so I knew I couldn't back out.
I will say that I was extremely nervous. From basic fears like "What if the rope breaks?" to more obnoxious fears like, "What if a whale or great white shark breaches at the same time I jump?" Ridiculous, I know, but that's how my mind works. And I actually asked those questions. But I was assured (even by other people in New Zealand before ever booking the jump) that New Zealand is HUGE on safety. Some people even say too much so. Tourism is a huge part of New Zealand's livelihood, so how would it look if they had accidents happen often? Not good. So they definitely make sure things are operating correctly - especially this particular company.
From booking to even after my jump, this company was very professional. They offer free pick ups at the Maritime Museum in Auckland Harbor - which is nice. And then it's just a short drive to their office. When you first get there, you fill out "toe-tag" registration cards - funny/unnerving at the same time. Then they check you in and weigh/double check you. You get a small locker to store your stuff (for me, my purse/phone) and then they quickly get you suited up with the harness and a helmet (which I assume is for any debris that might fall from the bridge since cars pass overhead, as you are only required to wear them on the bridge walk - not on the jump itself). The person who suited us up and took us on the walk up the bridge to our jumping point was actually the photographer. You are always hooked into a safety line while walking - even though there is a railing and it would be pretty tough to fall over - would have to be deliberate. The scariest part is actually walking up the stairs to the jump pod as they are grated stairs and there is nothing between them and the water below.
Initially, the bridge actually doesn't look that high, and you feel like maybe it isn't that good of a bungy, but all that immediately goes away when you are actually standing on the edge of the platform - yikes!
When you get to the pod, there are two jump masters (who I am told, in New Zealand, actually have to get certified to do their job) who briefly explain the process. Then, one at a time (there were 7 of us on the first jump of the day that day) they hooked one person up (the next waiting on deck) and explained the process further to each individual. This might seem like a no brainer to some people (especially those who have bungeed before), but you aren't actually attached by your feet. I only say this so that first-timers (like me) know how safe it is and that you aren't going to somehow "slip out." You are actually wearing a full harness that you step your legs through and that is tightened around your stomach, it's just that your feet are attached to the line as well so that you get the experience of going head first. You actually release your feet at the bottom of the jump, so that they can reel you back up in a seated position in your harness (no worries if you can't get the feet undone, they can pull you up feet first as well).
The jump masters are very professional and cross check each other, but even so, it's not going to take the fear away when you first jump. I mean, it's not human nature to jump off a bridge. Walking out on the platform (or shuffling rather, as your feet at hooked together) is scary, but the worst feeling in the world is the initial point of no return where you lean over just far enough to where you can't change your mind and step back on the platform as it's already too late. It will freak you out. And I didn't anticipate me screaming at all, but a legitimate, terrified, LONG scream came out. Once you reach the end though - and realize you're still alive - the screaming stops. But my heart was definitely still racing. The snap of the bungee is a bit shocking when you bounce back up, but surprisingly, it didn't hurt or give you whiplash like I thought it would. Though, I did jump exactly the way they told me to (hands/head first), as we were told that jumping feet first was still ok, just probably less comfortable when the rope snaps back at the bottom. Other than that, to be honest, I don't remember anything about the bungee itself. The fear/adrenaline was so strong that I didn't get time to enjoy/pay attention to the experience or what I was seeing. I couldn't even tell you what music was playing when I jumped (side note: as a lot of other reviewers have mentioned, they blast awesome music from inside the jump pod as people are jumping).
Now, the only thing that made me not remembering the jump ok was that, at the end of the jumps (when you are back in the office), they have several large monitors on which you can view photos/videos taken of you. I have to say, this is easily the most professional video I've ever seen made for purchase on a thrill attraction. I have done the SkyJump in Las Vegas where you pay to have a GoPro attached to your wrist - which is still cool to have - but it was nothing like the AJ Hackett Auckland Bridge Bungy. They have like 3 or 4 cameras set up at different locations on the bridge which capture multiple angles. It also starts with a video scan of Auckland City and the Bridge on the day you jump (capturing the weather - which for me was cold and rainy). They then put the whole video together to music (and again, it is all ready to view/purchase immediately after you're back at the office - super efficient). You don't have to buy anything if you don't want to, but if it's your first time, I would definitely recommend it to have - or at least purchase the access code that lets you view it online and show your friends/family. (You can also film with your own GoPro if you wish, but it is at your own risk). The only slight bummer was the fact that there was no audio (outside the music added to the video). We were specifically told by the cameraman that there were microphones in the pod that would capture our audio. I had also seen other Harbor Bridge Bungees on YouTube that had audio as well (having recorded both the jumpers' voices and the music playing in the pod as they jumped). After getting home I emailed the company to ask if I was looking at the wrong video and if there was one with my audio as well (as I wanted to hear my scream), but was informed that they just switched over to a new video system and that the microphones were not yet working. I was a little bummed, but as I said, the video was still of really high quality. And had I not seen previous YouTube videos, I wouldn't even know I was missing out on anything - still well worth it.
At the end of the day, I would definitely recommend both this experience and this company to anyone with even a slight curiosity - even if it is a "do it once and never do it again" sort of thing. The company was definitely safe and professional. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was that the staff wasn't overly friendly. Don't get me wrong, they weren't rude or unprofessional or anything, but they weren't overly personable at all. Maybe that seems like a weird comment to make, but from the things I had heard about the AJ Hackett company, I guess I just pictured all the staff (from drivers/check-in/jump masters) to constantly be super upbeat and trying to get people pumped and excited - especially for the first jumps of the day. But the only ones who seemed to break out of their shells a little bit and talk to people seemed to be the camera guy who first helped everyone get suited up (Simon I think his name was?) and one of the girls who rang up my photo purchase order (don't know her name, but she was super sweet). Again, this wasn't a deterrent at all, just a small thing I noticed. But everyone was still extremely professional and I would recommend this company to anyone.
A nice bonus? Every jumper gets a free jumper T-Shirt (which is cool to be able to wear and show off since you EARNED it), but also a 20% discount for life if you ever jump at ANY AJ Hackett location again (and you pay $60 (NZD) instead of $160 (NZD) if you jump again within 6 months). Pretty cool! Meaning it's great for locals too (in fact, there was a local Auckland couple in my jump group that had never bungeed before and just finally decided - hey it's in my city, why not)?
Anyway, all in all, great company. And great experience for thrill seekers and scaredy cats alike! ;)

I took my family of 4 here and had a great time. The staff was very friendly and the jump itself was a blast... once in a lifetime! And i do mean ONCE! When you look at the overhead of this business, this place is a gold mine! I paid well over $600 for my family of 4! The cost of the jump is one thing but when you get back they entice you with photos $45 each! Videos were another $45. I asked to get a better spot to take PICS, but nooo, that is reserved for their photographer!!! Why not let us get the good views for photo-taking? Because you want to milk every last $$$ that you can out of us- thats why! Oh but you get a 'free' t-shirt at the end... :(

Hi Ross,
Our apologies that you left with negative feelings regarding the price of our photos and videos. We understand how important it is to take these memories away with you and do hope that our customers get the very best photos they can. However, due to safety requirements we cannot allow customers to roam the bridge unescorted which unfortunately does limit the places from which they can take personal photographs. Also, we'd like to clarify that the $45 is for the full photo pack, not per photograph.
Again, we're sorry that you were not able to access certain parts of the bridge to get the photos you desired, but hopefully you still took away some positive memories!

My 16 year old daughter and I jumped off of the Auckland Harbour Bridge care/of AJ Hackett. They were superb in their treatment of my daughter, who was apprehensive of the experience, and me. I loved every second of the jump. When my daughter jumped, the photo and video cameras failed. I was given the option of a partial refund (for the photo package), or a 2nd jump could be had for free. My daughter mustered up her guts and did a 2nd jump, much to her dismay. Wish the malfunction happened on my jump! Regardless, AJ Hackett handled the problem to my full satisfaction. Do the jump, and do it with them!

What a great way to get your blood pumping! The jump itself was exciting and my first reaction was to want to do it again. The staff is well organized, very friendly and certainly did their best to help everyone jump that had signed up (we had one that did not). The sales pitch to buy all the pictures and videos was low which we appreciated. When they drove us back to town they made a special drop off for us at an alternate location, which we again appreciated.

I thought the bungy was awesome, although it's only 40m it's still super scary and the ocean touch adds to the adrenaline. The price of the jump is fair but photo and video prices are ridiculous, almost the same price as the actual jump, the photos are great quality but video could be miles better, half of it is watching you getting ready before the jump, can't even hear you speaking so it's just pretty boring. The staff were good but could be friendlier, apart from the guy who got me ready and counted me down I didn't get a smile or reassurance from any other staff members, I wasn't even asked how my jump was after I had done it. I have worked in a similar job so I know how far a smile and some compassion can go. All in all- a must do :)

The jump was unbelievable - can't even explain the feeling, just unreal. Very scary however I am glad I did it. The guy that assisted me with my jump/getting ready was lovely too and made me feel more at ease (Well however much more at ease you can feel when you're jumping off a bridge haha).
When my partner and I arrived back at the reception area, we were shown 2 lots of photos. 1 set was from our bridge climb, and the other set was from my bungy. They were $45 each set, and approx 6 photos in each set. We couldn't afford to get both, as I was already getting the dvd of my bungy. A lot of the photos of the bridge climb were dark and not fantastic quality (it had started to rain when we were out there), but there was 1 we liked. I told reception we would love to buy a set of the photos, and asked kindly if it was possible to get the bungy set, but swap one of the bungy photos for one of my partner and I on the climb, so we still had a memento from doing it). They were extremely rude and very abruptly said no they could not do that. We were really disappointed, we don't understand why they couldn't do that. We would have been spending more money with them if they could swap just 1 photo out of the folder, however they lost a sale because of this. If they can't do it, then why on earth not, what else will they be doing with the photos?
Anyway, the jump was great but reception staff not so much and the photos are well overpriced. On the note of the dvd, it is great however I wanted to share it with friends on facebook and it appears they have enabled it so I can't do that. This is also quite disappointing for the cost that I paid for it ($45). Considering it cost me $230 to do the bridge climb and jump, and my partner $120 to do just the climb, you would think a memento photo should really be included in that price, as we all know it costs next to nothing to print photos these days.

Hi there,
We are excited to hear that you enjoyed your Bungy and Bridge Climb, but we’re sorry to hear that your experience back at the base wasn’t the best. We have been through your feedback with the team to ensure that the experience is not repeated. In response to the various points you have raised:
• Uploading your video from your DVD to Facebook is possible - you just need software to 'rip' the DVD, and software to convert to a web optimised video. You can Google for software to do this – there are many on the web to use.
• You raise a good point with respect to us offering a better deal for our Bungy and Climb customers who wish to purchase their Photo and Video products for both. In Queenstown we have recently introduced a $20 add on for 2nd activity Photo & Video packs. Given your feedback we will introduce this to Auckland as well, so that customers who purchase their Bungy Photo and Video will be able to get their Bridge Climb photo offering for just $20.
• You made comment that photos don’t cost much to print. We hope you understand that the costs are not just in the printing. There is an enormous cost in the cabling to all of our cameras, the network and server infrastructure, the cost of our crew, and then the actual end consumable.
We hope this brief response adequately responds to your points. Thank you for your feedback – we always like to hear from our customers and to continue to improve our products from such feedback.

I did the bungy jump recently, it was a great experience. this experience is not for the faint hearted .
it cost quite a bit of money so be prepared.in addition to paying for the jump..there are photos and video and extra cost for accompanying personal.
there is a $20 fee for any person accompanying the jumpign person..which i thought was totally unnecessery and just another way to make money :(
i think it would've been fair if they said 'only 1 person allowed to accompany the jumper' but adding a fee for that was totally unjustifiable.

If you're only going to do it once, this is a great place to leap. The Auckland Bridge overlooking Waitamata Harbour is a 40 meter (131 foot) leap of faith. Fortunately, AJ Hackett is the gold standard of bungy jumping. They created bungy jumping in 1988 and are still going strong. The staff is friendly and professional, the standard for safety is very high and it's a great club to be part of. The adrenaline rush is intense, touch the water if you dare. It's an amazing view, it's a thrilling jump and if you're only going to do it once...

Do they provide GoPro camera?
Can you use your own selfie stick?

Hey Ali. Thanks for your post. We do not provide Go Pros (we are a separate company to AJ Hackett Cairns), however you are allowed to take yours - at your own risk. We require them to be securely attached to you, and selfie sticks cannot be extended past your hand, for your own safety. We can talk this through to you on site. Hope that helps! :)
