Not so long ago, this area around James St was a seedy backwater cut off from the rest of Perth by the railway. Now it is the cultural heart of Perth, mainly thanks to Sir Charles Court, the WA Premier, who put the mining wealth flowing into the State Treasury to use, making Perth a civilised city. The WA Art Gallery, State Library of WA, and Perth Institute of Contmporary Art (PICA) are all in this area.

The recent opening of the Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip adds a new dimension to the Perth Cultural Cenre which had been sadly lacking while the previous WA Museum was being rebuilt. The area around James St was once run down, but it is now the cultural hub of Perth. The WA Art Gallery has a good collection, including local artists. The State Library of WA has an unmatched collection of WA publications, including the Battye Library, which concentrates on WA's local history. PICA -- the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts -- usually has something interesting on show, and the theatre centre showcases live performance. The Cultural Centre is connected to the Perth Railway Station by a convenient walkway. It's easy to spend a day checking out the Cultural Centre, there's something new every time I visit Perth.

This event is conveniently held during the school holidays to maximise attendance by children.
There are a number of workshops in venues around the Precinct including Perth Institute of Contemporary Art and the State Library.
This event attracts international artists to perform and participate.
Well worth as visit as most activities are free..!

This is a great area of Perth where lots of new events and activities commence.

It has heritage buildings and entertainment such as the museum, state library, art gallery, PICA and wildlife stream/pond wetlands display.

It gets lit up wth amazing lighting regularly attracting families and prople to chill out and enjoy. I always enjoy the free movies that are run daily at the base of the steps that double as seating.

This wasn't always the case as this once was an unsafe area which has been transformed into a family friendly area.

Nice area for things to do...everything's in walking distance of the train station and there's plenty of areas for refreshments nearby (a couple of cafes in the library and art gallery and some coffee shops nearby, plus Northbridge is next door). A great way to spend a day or two.

It's a great idea to put together all the cultural buildings in a city, such as the museum, library, art gallery, and so forth. It was very pleasant to walk along this area, with some nice old heritage buildings giving way to more modern ones. There are also several benches with the name of the wood carved on them, where one can sit while tired. This is a great place for a walk!

I made a new friend, Skye and we had a great time in the Perth cultural centre! We took some photos with her Barbie doll, it was awsome!

This is Perth's cultural precinct - you've got the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA), State Library of Western Australia, Blue Room Theatre and The State Theatre of Western Australia all within walking distance in the precinct. Please be aware that the Western Australian Museum is closed for redevelopment. The Urban Orchard is a lovely open space that sometimes hosts an open public bar area during events such as Fringe Festival. The James Street Amphitheatre is also used for performances in front of the huge open widescreen TV. Often I've walked past the Perth Cultural Centre and tents are set up for an expo or even the Night Noodle Markets (now relocated to Elizabeth Quay). It's within walking distance to the city centre, Perth train station and Northbridge dining and entertainment precinct.

The Perth Cultural Center is an area of town that is bounded by Roe, Beaufort, Francis and William Streets. The Art Museum, Library, etc. are located within this area. They were setting up for Fringe World which is going to held in this area over the next month. Lots of people walking around when we were there.

Nice place to hang out at. Open areas and great vibes. The architecture is nice and the WA Art Gallery alone is reason to go there.
