Had a great visit to the Art Gallery this January 2020. No special exhibits on this year, but was still impressed to see sculptures from Henry Moore there. Also so many new and exciting artist on display. Beautiful place to spend time. Always something lovely to see.

I'ne been here a number of times as they have resident collections and visiting ones.
The new one this visit was about Brutalistc art of which the building itself is a fine example.
There are specialist guided tours you can sign up for or just mooch at your own pace as I do.
There are nany outstanding pieces on display, I visit most times I come over from the UK.

Western Australia is a long way from the Eastern States and WA people often feel insecure when confronted by the great Australian Modernists. It is satisfying, that instead of attempting to catch up, the WA Art Gallery is concentrating on artists with a WA connection such as Guy Grey-Smith, Robert Juniper and Blamire Young. Many discerning visitors will find WA artists more interesting than Modernists who are well-represented in major galleries elsewhere.

The Art Gallery of Western Australia (WA) has a collection ballanced between local artists and big names from the Eastern States. I find works by the locals, such as Guy Grey-Smith and Robert Juniper, to be more interesting. They are Modernists who were removed from the mainstrrem and went their own way.. Grey-Smith's "Torbay" series is among the best set of Australian Modernist painitngs of the 20th century. The Gallery is compact, but there is always sometthing new to see. Among the first things I do when I return to Perth is to visit the Gallery. The Gallery is in Northbridge, Perth's cultural hub.

I've only been to a handful of art galleries in my lifetime, but I've seen enough of them in Italy to know that this gallery is on par with some of the European ones. Without mentioning the art, as it frequently gets replaced by newer works, the layout of the building makes it convenient to walk around and pushes you to explore all its corners. The staff was helpful to me when asking for directions and in general attending this gallery was a nice and refreshing experience from the daily routine of home-work life, especially during the lockdowns..
Anyhow, if you're unsure about it, read some of the other reviews and go for it, the 1-2 hours spent in there will be worth it

The building is described as brutalistic/ modernism ( not the building shown in the picture, this is the Perth institute of modern art.).The range of pictures is significant from indigenous to modern plus Australian artists. It is free and yuo get excellent advice from the volunteers who assist. Not to be missed!

We normally have half a day at the gallery but when we called the main part had been closed for refurbishment and there was a limited display in the old court house. I know that the Gallery needs renovation but it was not widely publicised and we wasted a morning going into town to find it shut.
Very disappointing

As an art lover, I made it a must to pop into the Gallery to have a view of the art of display here. Surprisingly, there were some reviews where people mentioned that the art was not to their taste. Personally I loved the exhibition, especially "Balancing Act" ,"Death Metal Summer" & "State of Abstraction".
The Gallery is not open on Tuesdays, as I found to my dismay, having not planned that visit properly. Their opening hours are also from 9am to 5pm, with the last entry at 4pm. I went in summer, so the light filtering into the gallery at the rooftop was perfect and something you shouldn't miss. Entry is free, you'll be require to leave your bags and won't be able to bring your tripods in!

My wife and I have visited this art gallery periodically over a period of ten years or so. The quality of the art works has declined greatly in that time.
At present the art on display is mainly Australian Aboriginal, which we don't find particularly interesting. What wasn't Aboriginal was poor modern abstract. There seemed to be nothing on display of the older style of classic Australian art, by the greats of the Heidelberg School (Roberts, Mc Cubbin, etc), Heysen, and such.

Excellent pieces throughout, well displayed and not overwhelming. We enjoyed taking our time with the family, discussing each of the pieces and the range of modern to traditional paintings and sculptures. We didn't quite manage to see it all, but as entry is free, it is easy to return another day.
Enjoyed the break from the Perth heat and the tranquility of the gallery for a couple of hours. Even the Gallery cafe was top quality.
Ground level was the highlight for us, and we were happy to take more time here and then skim the upper levels.

How much time would you suggest spending at the Art Gallery of WA in one day in November 2017? According to the AGWA website, Current Exhibitons then will include: WA Now – Gregory Pryor, Six seasons gallery – outside: matters of the heart in indigenous art, Your Collection (Ongoing), The Collection - Currently you can view historical works from the 1800s-1920s in the Centenary Galleries. Contemporary works from 1980-today are also on display.
Black Swan Prize for Portraiture (Nov 1 - 27).

I love to take my time and when I visited there were several spaces closed for change of exhibition, spent three or so hours. Sounds like when you visit they will all be open...I would allow minimum of three and if you are like me, more. There is another gallery very close which is also worth spending time in..sadly it was closed for change of exhibition when I was in Perth. The State Library (also very close) has exhibitions and you could spend an hour there. Stop for lunch and you have filled a day!

I remember seeing a painting in your gallery (2 years ago?) by one of the "Heidelberg School"... ?McCubbin, Roberts? ... I don't remember who! It was a "cottage" scene, in the kitchen. As I recall, it showed a fire, with kettle on the hob, etc, with mantlepiece above.
On the mantlepiece was an "old" clock (by our modern standards). When I came home, I looked at the old clock we have here, and I thought, "This is the same (or close to it) as the one in that painting in the WA Art gallery!"
I now regret not taking more notice of that painting. Perhaps I should have taken a photo? (Is that allowed these days?)
I can't recall the details of the painting... not even of the artist. I have a particular interest in Roberts/Mc Cubbin et al. and would be interested in finding out more about this painting if I can.
Are you able to help me please? Can you identify the painting I have described? I'm sorry I don't have the name of the paining or even of the artist... just the "impression" it left on me. (I would love to have a picture of the painting... perhaps you have one in your shop?)
Thank you for taking the trouble to at least read this e-mail... and, I hope, being able answer my query,
Sincerely,
Allen Edwards
Bayswater,
Victoria

Thank you for your message and for visiting the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Based on your description we believe it may be the painting titled 'Breaking the News' by John Longstaff.
We hope this is the painting you are referring to. If not please feel free to email us online@artgallery.wa.gov.au
