Bring blankets and cushions & enjoy films under the stars
It was really fun to see a movie in this historic cinema - it had great atmosphere. The chairs are deck chair-style, and a cushion or pillow goes a long way towards making them more comfy. Evenings can be chilly, so bring blankets for your legs, too. They sell drinks (alcohol and soda), as well as candy, popcorn and icecream.

    Don’t miss it!
We absolutely love this outdoor cinema and have seen a movie on all 3 of our holidays in Broome. It has a fascinating history and the uniqueness of this outdoor venue ensures that you’ll have a great night. The canvas deck chairs are very comfortable and make sure to grab a choc top ice cream! Be generous with the insect repellent and take a jumper as it can cool down during the evening.

Early session better depending on movie choices. Local restaurants just let them know your going to 6.15 movie. Nostalgic experience. Worth the latest releases. Be mindful of flight path for early planes but then this adds to experience.

Book a taxi for after the show if you are staying at Cable Beach or out of town..
We went last night, it's a great way to see a movie under the stars. We went to the 6.15pm session, another movie started at 8.30pm. Seats are comfortable but if you can take a cushion along then that's even better. The big issue is that Broome no longer has a Nightrider bus service, it was cancelled in June 2023, so if you stay at Cable Beach or outside the city a taxi is your only option after dark. There is no Uber and very few taxi's, the service is shocking, we booked a cab and waited more than 30 minutes. We had thought to get dinner after the movie but the restaurants were all closed at 8.30pm. We think Broome is dying, this is our 4th visit at least and we wont be coming back again. All the good coffee shops like Zoo keepers at Cable Beach have closed - its a brewery now that opens at Noon. Pity as once a town starts to die it gets worse.

Really lovely experience to enjoy such an iconic venue
It is really beautiful to appreciate such a famous location, but you should bring extra padding because the seats do become uncomfortable after some time. Gold class it is not! Additionally, depending on the season, it might become a little chilly in the nights. It is like going back in time and is definitely worth include on the schedule.

What an experience in more ways than one! Watching a movie under the stars on deck chairs and having planes fly low overhead were 2 unique experiences. And experiencing this at the World's oldest operating picture garden makes it all the more special.

The only negative were the mossies. Make sure you spray repellant on your body beforehand.

Glad they operated on Good Friday as most attractions and cafes were all closed. Ticket prices were also at the usual rates. It would have been better if they opened much earlier for us to look at the memorabilia inside the building before the movie started. Ticket door was only opened 20mins before - just enough time to get your ticket and queue for drinks.

This has to be on your priority list when visiting Broome!

What a fantastic place to watch a movie. The very front seats were perfect. You can see the whole screen and there’s a nice patch of lawn in front of it. The deck chairs are comfy though some people take pillows for lower back support which I’d no next time. The ode aeroplane coming in low above China Town add to the uniqueness.

This place is an icon and its easy to see why. The canvas seats outside under the stars, the museum and its collection of old movie projectors, posters and other movie memorabilia and the feeling you have stepped back in time. When you are in Broome keep a night free to a movie night.

The world’s oldest outdoor movie theater dating back to 1916 is in Broome, Australia. Sun Picture Theater has a sign posted saying it is a 2004 Guinness record holder and the world’s oldest open-air museum still in use after 100 years. Built in 1916 by a pearling master, the first screened talking movie was “Monte Carlo” in 1933. The cinema is known as a picture garden because it has a main building with undercover seating, deckchairs outdoors and a grassy lawn to watch a movie. A sign notes Japanese-descent people were allowed to sit on the left side, pearling masters in the center, Filipinos and Koepangers on the side and Aboriginal people in the back. Movies were shown three times a week. Each movie opened with “God Save the Queen”, the national anthem. Tours are offered but not available the day we visited so had to be content reading the signs posted near the entrance. Three stars because we were not able to see interior.

I have to say that this is one of my favourite attractions because it is authentic.
I could sit there for hours. It gave me a keen sense of history and I luv how you can drop by and wander through. Thank you Broome for making this a special experience.

This cinema is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest still functioning cinema in the world. It has a wonderful history dating back to the silent era and is in essence a piece of living history. Partly open air, some of the stories around the building are fascinating. Snippets like having to lift your feet while watching the movie as the king tide has inundated the street and buildings are amazing.

Over 100 years old, this is one of the oldest outdoor cinemas in WA. Find a film you want to see, buy a drink and sit under the stars in this tropical city for an evening of fun.
You may find yourself watching a thriller, or even singing along to Mama Mia! OMG!

Heard so much about it, walk past it and didn't think much of it. Looked dilapidated and run down, but had to try it out. And we didn't regret it, venue inside is very well maintained and overall was a great experience in a venue with so much history. Was great to wash it down with a choc bomb.

Amazing experience to watch a movie outdoors. Chairs are not the most comfortable and would recommend a blanket but the kids loved it. We watched top gun so having plans fly overhead during the movie really added to the experience. Not sure how it would go with a different movie
