I was initially reluctant to go, but it ended up a very worthwhile visit. Very historical, very well presented and cared for. Staff are very helpful and proud about their facility. Lot's of insight about the Missionary work carried out by a lot of very brave and committed people !!!

The Relationships Exhibition is aptly named. Enter this representation of the Irish nun's physical and spiritual relationship with the dispossessed people of the Kimberley and be open to learning.

A visit to this Heritage Centre is highly recommended for anyone who wishes to gain a good perspective of the wonderful contribution of the Catholic missionaries including the men of the Trappist and Pallottine orders, and the Sisters of St John of God who came to the West Kimberley region and Broome from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The... More

I am not religious. In fact sometimes I am critical of the 'interference' of do-gooders among indigenous cultures. But I had to admire the work of the nuns of the Sisters of St John of God who worked in Broome in the early twentieth century. What a hell-hole it must have been! Hot, dusty, and remote. Nothing like the life... More

Well, what a surprise. We came upon the Sisters of St John of God Centre, purely by chance or divine intervention late one night last week. We had been drinking for a few hours and being not sober to drive we were walking back to our caravan park and passed the centre during our walk. Keeping it in mind for... More

A great range of displays and huge range of information to expand your knowledge of the fascinating history of this gorgeous town. I was given a warm greeting and made to feel very welcome by a lovely man called Bill, who explained that I could go back the following day as I didn't have long to look through until they... More

This was a real eye-opener showing the courage and persistence of the nuns in this then remote part of the world - putting in perspective the good that has come from religious orders at a time when the churches are under scrutiny. Highly recommended to set aside one or two hours for the visit.

We came upon the SSHG Heritage Centre by accident, and ended up spending 2 hours there. The display is excellent and describes in detail the history of the sisters of St John of God and their pioneering health and education work among the remote communities of the Kimberley. It is a timely reminder of the great good achieved by these... More

The SSJG Heritage Centre is one place where I can spend hours finding old photos and stories. Whenever I visit I stay longer than planned because I am always finding old stories that I remember happened in my time growing up in the Broome area (the late fifties and sixties). I even found some old photos of myself, my brothers... More
