The station was renovated recently, it's easy to get around. My only quibble is that conveniences are limited.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 22, 2023
- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia13,591 contributionsOne of Melbourne's most convenient stationsSouthern Cross Station is popular, it's one of Melbourne's most convenient stations. From here run suburban trains, interstate and regional trains and coaches, and you can connect to airports via speedy coach services. Southern Cross Station is a welcome modern station which replaced the old rundown station. Southern Cross Station is easily accessible to adjoining Marvel Stadium; it's popular with sports fans. About the only minor quibble about Southern Cross Station is that some local residents say the occasional get fumes, because most vehicles run on diesel fuel. The Southern Cross Station operator will install extractor fans.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 7, 2024
- roy vTraralgon, Australia5,935 contributionsNice friendly staffRecently we were in Melbourne for the night before flying out the next morning. Stayed near the station so went to Subway and got a nice foot long BMT meal . What impressed me most was the place was spotless and the staff were very friendly. The meal was very nice and filling . Great for a quick and reasonably healthy mealVisited May 2024Traveled soloWritten June 20, 2024

Southern Cross Station is quite aesthetically pleassing. Southern Cross Station is the hub for Victorian regional V-Line train services. It is also the starting point for Melbounre to Sydney and Melboure to Adelaide Overland train services. You can also catch the Skybus to Tullamarine Airport. Southern Cross is conveniently located for Yarra Tram services.Suburban trains go through the station.. By the way, it's the best access for DFO and Marvel Stadium.

Very clean and modern station. Ample signage to direct you around and traveling is made easy with the myki card. Train are clean as well. For those who are rushing for the train, you can pick up something at the station.

Southern Cross Station is so so so much better than the old Spencer Street which was always looking filthy. Southern Cross Station is ten out of ten and getting from platform to the buses is so easy and the cafe's and restaurants are fabulous. Well done to the people who designed all of this.

Southern Cross Station is a good looking station. Trains leave for Adelaide and Sydney, and V/Line trains leave for regional Victoria. Suburban trains transit here. The Sky Bus leaves for Tullamarine Airport from here. It's a lot better looking than the old Spencer St Station.

Southern Cross Station was the station I used the most during my recent stay in Melbourne during August. It was convenient for me, the Sky Bus direct to and from the airport, plus country trains to Ballarat and Geelong depart there as well. Also, great choice of tram routes around the CBD from there. There is also a customer service centre for those requiring a myki card or info about how to use public transport.

Took the train from Melbourne to Sydney. Don't check your bags at Southern Cross if you are even a fraction over the 20 Kg weight limit as it is rigorously enforced, as is the 16 Kg limit on checked luggage on Victorian local trains. Use the racks at the end of the cars.
The station itself is OK, but many of the staff seem to be absolutely miserable in their jobs.

There are too many homeless people sleeping around the station and it was difficult to get around the place. It had a bad smell which was really off putting. They need to better maintain the place. There needs to be a zebra crossing so that people can walk across the road in the bus terminal rather than blocking it off completely.

Centrally located with easy access to lots of hotels, dining & retail nearby. There is a mid sized COLES supermarket nearby. The only stop for the Airport Skybus - great that the alighting & drop off points are sheltered inside the station.

3 times a week each in either direction, day trips only, i was in premier seating that is an older style but quite good with lots of room to move around. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea all supplied. 11 hr comfortable train ride for $170. $50 for economy with no food, half an airfare but with a club carriage to purchase.

The lockers are currently located near the luggage hall. This is as you leave the Skybus from the airport... the entry near the bus terminal. If you walk in from the coach terminal, they are on your left before you get to the Luggage window.

Hi!
I need to travel to South Yarra so I definitely need a myki but can I know whether the ticketing counter is opened after 7PM?
Another question is that, I will be travelling with big luggages, will it be a hassle travelling via public transport?
I appreciate any sort of help!
Thanks in advance.
Written August 22, 2018
Yes, you can buy myki at the auto-ticketing machine at any train station. I believe there are limited counters manned by officers at main stations if there are trains. Most kiosks - news agents - will sell or top up myki for you.
A few trains stop by South Yarra. Check the notice board which one to take. You should be fine with a large luggage by train or bus, but not tram.

Anyone know if there are large lockers or a place I could store my luggage for the day before checking in at my accommodation? Thank you!
Written March 9, 2017
There are. They are near the sock shop by the bus terminals. They were large enough to fit our oversized luggage and made our stay a little more convenient.
