I recommend doing a day ground pass and then get tickets to a night session at Rod Laver or Margaret Court. There are lots of food and drinking options within the area. Prices are as expected more expensive than a normal cafe/takeaway venue.
You can take food and drink bottles (there are heaps of water stations to fill up). A hat is a must the Melbourne sun is heavy. At night the temperatures drop so I recommend a jacket. Tram to and from the games is free. Walking from the CBD (Flinders station area) is flat and easy.
It gets very busy in the drinking area out on the grounds. It is hard to get a seat and 80% here are here to drink and enjoy the vibe of the games. If you want space and to concentrate on the game I recommend getting seated tickets in one of the arenas.

What a fun party! The tennis was amazing, the entry price very reasonable, and the entire place is one big party! We bought tickets to Rod Laver Arena and those cost a bit more--but still pretty reasonable for a Grand Slam event.

Tennis has four Grand Slams, only one tournament is in the Southern Hemisphere -- the Australian Open, held each January at Melbourne Park. It's also known as the Grand Slam of the Asia-Pacific. The world's top players attend, in pursuit of the elusive Grand Slam. It's a great carnival. It's easy to gain entrance to the outer courts, where the price to view the preliminary rounds is quite inexpensive. Many spectators turn up every year. As it is in the Australian summer, you are unlikely to get cold. By the way, you can walk to Melbourne Park from the City or take the tram, which takes around 5 or 10 minutes.

Tournament scheduling was appalling. No conlsideration for either players or fans. The late starts for some matches were completely unacceptable. The main courts may be better of course but watching tennis on the big screens in the grounds is a miserable experience. Huge advertising screens distract from the matches. This is abour commercial gain not tennis. Poor commentary does not help. Not worth the ground ticket price. Recommend fans watch at home and save their money unless they can afford the seat prices on the show courts - and the time when the matches run in the early hours because of the absurd scheduling.

The Australian Open now uses dynamic pricing. Our tickets cost $200 more for each ticket when we bought the tickets weeks ago. On the event day the tickets are $200 less. Just a joke and feel so ripped off!

Arrived to hear staff yelling directions at people waiting to get, appeared to be lack of signage/organisation, security was poor, I had a bag and while attempting to open and place on table for inspection I was told don’t worry about it and just keep walking!!
Once inside there was a sea of pop up shops advertising and selling alcohol. However if you want something to eat, those establishments are well hidden and you’ll have to go hunting for food. Paid $20 for a disgusting, cold chicken burger which ended up in the bin.
I arrived around 11am and the crowd was manageable, line ups bearable. By mid afternoon it was apparent to me that way too many ground passes sold, while people continued to flood through the gates and the amount of people severely impaired experience.
Encountered several young staff members that had no idea what they were doing.
A disappointing experience.

Terrible terrible!!! Australian open scheduling is pathetic. It is disrespectful to players and fans. We flew from Perth to see our favourite Djokovic in the quarterfinals. We arrived and learned he was moved to the day session and we paid (a premium) to watch the night session. Because they started late we could only go into Rob Laver after 9pm. To watch the women’s quarter final. In the end we watched about 40 min of tennis then went to our over priced hotel . A total waste of money. Melbourne park won’t see us again

We love Rod Laver arena and the AO is an awesome event, but you can imagine our disappointment when we arrived at our seats and found the couple in front of us had wide brimmed hats. I mean it is really hard to look past people in front with wide brimmed hats. And it was the evening session!! I mean fair enough to wear a hat when you are in the sun but surely not at night. You wouldn’t wear a wide brimmed hat to the movies or a concert. Some people’s lack of self awareness in those situations is really disappointing and really ruined our experience especially for my wife who is already not the tallest and struggled to properly follow the rallies. The AO should look to discourage spectators who want to wear wide brimmed hats in the evening sessions.

Went with company after work, after waiting for 10 minutes, security was rude and wont let me go inside because there is a small spoon in my lunch box? While others with me are carrying sharp keys, perfume bottles, and different types of huge cameras and bags with metal on it. He said either throw away my belonging or cloak it. I walked out the line to the cloak room and staff told me there is a 15.20aud fee. Seriously. what the hell??? Inside was crowded and rooms didn’t have air con. Never coming back again

Fantastic epic amazing it was so so good. Whether you love tennis or not there's plenty of entertainment for everyone. We had the best week and got to see big name players and up and coming future stars we had it all including epic nearly 6hr thriller with Andy Murray coming from behind so glad we were there to see this! If you haven't experienced AO then do yourself a favour and go! Can't wait to go back next year!

Question - I'm thinking of going to see the 2025 Australian Open tennis. Can you tell me how to purchase the ground pass and various tickets and how much they cost?
Answer:
The dates for 2025 are 12-26 January. If you go to the official website (unfortunately Tripadvisor does not allow a link to be included here but just google ausopen ticket info ), it will explain the various types of tickets you can get. I just checked and the information has not yet been updated from 2024 but it will still be useful to let you know some of the ticket-types.
The cheapest ticket is the 'Ground Pass' which gives you general access to the grounds, and some arenas (Kia & John Cain Arena) but does not give access to the main areas (Margaret Court & Rod Laver Arenas). In 2024 a one day ground pass was $29AUD / and $139 for a week.
However if you are travelling from overseas, I imagine that you will want to book the main arenas and perhaps the finals.
For tickets to the main arenas, you choose your days and seating and the price varies accordingly.
Go to the official site (again, I can't include a link here so just google ausopen 2025 dates announced ) for more information.
Tickets for AO2025 are scheduled to go on sale in October.

You can buy tickets onlne or at the venue. However if you want to be on the sho courts you will need to purchase tickets on line in advance. Australian Open has dynamic pricing. There are usually ground passes available on the day.

Can I purchase a day pass but later leave the grounds and re enter at a later time.
Written January 19, 2023
With a Rod Laver Arena 7pm ticket, what time can I enter the grounds? There is conflicting evidence online, with some people saying 5pm and some saying they walked around the grounds and outside all day before their 7pm ticket. Thanks!

I’m also interested to find this out. I have a ticket for women’s semi-final and not sure if I can get into the grounds early in the day or not. There is conflicting info online..

We have tickets to the men’s semi final which doesn’t start til 7 30pm. Does this let us in during the day to enjoy all the attractions ?

Hi. Hoping someone can answer me tonight before we head out to Aus Open tomorrow...
Can we bring a camelbak to the event?
Is this type of backpack not allowed?
It can still fit under the seat....
Hoping someone can get back to me :-)
Thanks in advance!

Is walking to and from a night session from Flinders Street safe and or wise? I see some recommendations to take the tram from Flinders Street Station. Thank you

Where can I purchase a ground pass for the night session at the AO? I can only find an all day pass online but we can’t attend until after work. Can you purchase these at the event?
