Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Melbourne is fortunate that the city fathers didn't follow in the prevailing municipal madness in the post-war era and tear up the tram tracks. Melbourne's tram are a blessing, you can go almost anywhere and they are rarely delayed. The trams are usually the best way to get around the city; efficient, cheap and no parking hassles. Just get a myki and go. If you are a senior, tram travel on weekends costs you nothing.

Only real grumble is that there are a number of popular attractions just outside the FREE Zone (e.g. MCG, DFO shopping). Also if you do travel out of the CBD (we did once to Camberwell Market) you have to buy a MYKI card, which costs about $6 and is non-refundable, in addition toy our fare. It cost my daughter and I over $18 for the short trip.

This is the second time for us in Melbourne and our Myki cards (last used about 7 years ago) had expired and could not be accessed online. After checking in at Flinders Street ticket booth the helpful bloke issued us new cards and transferred over the balance of a little over $10 each my wife and I still had on our cards form last time - cannot complain about the record keeping and honesty of a system like that!
These trams run regularly and all over the city and out to some of the suburbs we visited such as St Kilda. Definitely a convenient way of getting about the city and the free tram zone in the CBD is a great option when you have had enough exploring on foot.
The stops can get busy and if in a hurry these may not suit all, but well worth checking and using the PTV app if you want to download for travel options and maps etc.

Melbourne would be a boring city without without trams. Even in the current lockdown, the trams are still running, which makes life that bit easier. Of course, the drivers are cordoned off and everyone must wear masks, but this is a small price to pay for the convenience of using Yarra Trams. By the way, you must use a Myki card, but seniors travel for free on the weekend..

The tram system around Melbourne is fantastic. It’s a big network and they run very often. Trams within central Melbourne are free to use but as you go out to other zones you need a MYKI card to travel. Most small shops sell the card. It comes preloaded with credit which counts down as you use the card. You tap the card against a reader when you get on the tram. Most tram stops have machines which show the credit status of your card and you can top them up but they don’t issue new cards.
There is a mixture of old and new trams. The older ones aren’t very easy to get on and off and don’t have airconditioning
The routes are colour coded and the trams numbered so it’s fairly easy to work out after studying the maps on the stops.

Perhaps one of the few city tram systems still functional in any part of the world, the Public Transport Victoria is a must travel on any person visiting this beautiful and clean city.
The coaches are comfortable, spacious and air conditioned with lots of space to stand and sit.
Modern and very useful in reaching Melbourne Park for the Australian Open Tennis, the trams could have updated and illuminated route map on the lines of airline flight map to figure out where one is in this vast city.

Once you get your making card and get the map, the city is open to explore. The is a large area in the city where it is free hop on hop off and overall the system works really well. Very clean and the service is very regular.

Melbourne has one of the world's most extensive tram networks. The trams go everywhere in the city and inner suburbs. The trams are inexpensive; you must have a Myki, which can be bought at most stations. Cash is not acceptable. The colorful Art Trams are brightening up the city, they are decorated with indigenous themes. Yarra Trams run a reliable service; the trams are usually on time. Trams are a much-loved feature of Melbourne.

The trams are free in the city centre but you are informed when you are leaving the free zone. Outwith you require a MYKI card which we picked up at Southern Cross Station. These can be topped up in a variety of stores and stations and are a convenient method of negotiating Melbourne’s public transport system. Always remember to ‘tap’ on. The tram system is extensive and covers much of the city. Comfortable and convenient.

I normally get a train to the city however as there was work on the train lines I didn't particulary want to use the unreliable and inconvenient replacement buses.
I did some research and decided to drive to Wesfield Airport West and park there and get the 59 Airport West tram to the city.
Whilst it was a longer journey and one that took just over 40 minutes travel time, the tram wasn't busy and offered a great scenic ride through Niddre, Essenden, and Moonee Ponds.
This service is nice and reliable and offering service every 10-15 mins.

hi. the free tram is only tram no 35 ( tourist tram) or all tram service in the FTZ? if i am from Lonsdale St going to La Trobe St, i need to board tram no 86. do i need to tap myki for this journey?
Written December 4, 2018
35 is free for its entire loop - the other trams are free within a certain portion of the CBD, but paid outside of the free tram zone.
