About
Discover magnificent stone buildings reminiscent of Tuscany at this boutique, family-owned winery in an Australian bush setting. 45 minutes from central Melbourne, 35 minutes from Airport. Sample high quality estate produced wines: dry, sweet, sparkling and fortified. Enjoy light, rustic Italian style food with a glass of wine. Fire in winter, courtyard overlooking bush and vineyard in summer. Use Google maps as this one isn't clear! NB There are two Manuka roads that appear to access the winery. Enter ONLY at the Manuka Rd at the Panton Hill end of Cherry Tree Road and NOT the one 1/2 way along Cherry Tree Road.

Great cellar door venue, nice wines, byo picnic lunch Sundays
Feb 2021
We visited in early February 2021 for a wine tasting, and byo picnic lunch. The kitchen is open with a reasonable dining menu on some days, but no food is available on Sundays as that is "byo picnic" day.

Wine tasting - No tasting fee. Dorothy led a few of us through the history of the property (very interesting with European influenced architecture), then a tasting of several of the wines available for purchase. I found all wines to be rather good, with my red wine preference for the 2014 Stockbrokers Shiraz ($30) and the 2010 Cab Sauv Merlot Franc (Bordeaux style blend, $45). A glass of wine to consume with lunch costs ($10), which some people might think is a little pricey - but it's my preference.

Our group of 10 people booked in advance with a wine tasting from 12 noon, and a large table for lunch. There are a few under cover-tables outside in the Tuscan building setting, including two 10 seater tables (with bench seats). Because of the inclement weather we sat inside around a large 14-16 seat table in the middle of the cellar door main room adjacent to a large toasty open fire.

Some visitors have a little difficulty finding this venue because it is 1.5km down Manuka road from the junction of Manuka road and St Andrews Yarra Glen road. On our first visit many years ago our sat nav device took us to the other end of Manuka road, which goes to a dead end.

Also, it's worth mentioning that of all the wineries and cellar doors nearby in the Nillumbik region, this seems to be about the only one currently open all weekend, and with food offerings.

Terrific.
Oct 2020
A great hidden gem not far from suburbia...W e frequent regularly with friends/family and enjoy their crusty authentic Pizzas either outside in summer or near the big open fire in winter...The hosts are always centre stage offering advice on wines and sharing a joke or two with visitors....Couple a pizza with their local pinot noir for an easy lunch at very reasonable pricing in a rural setting which could be anywhere in France or Italy!!

Rustic Old Winery - Hand Built
Sep 2019
Beautiful part of the World, not to far from suburbia. Excellent range of Wines, especially their dessert wines. Varieties of many kinds, dreamt up by the somewhat eclectic owner. Delicious home made Pizza's made by the owners eaten by a huge fireplace with a glass or two of his finest. Not a Ritzy up market place but a Rustic down to earth Cellar Door. Try it.

Big wines at a heavenly vineyard and winery in the Victorian bush with Tuscan-like buildings at the end of a dirt track
Apr 2019 • Friends
A real vineyard, family created, owned and operated, with character, heavenly, not manicured lawns and glass boxes; a place of beauty where you can relax and, enjoy exceptional wines that taste of the Diamond Valley region within Yarra Valley. I think of two things in Victoria: putting my feet in the water at Wye River on the surf coast, and visiting Panton Hill vineyard (then Lovegrove, and Wedgetail wines over the same day). And I always recall when Rex the pointer jumped through my open car window as I was about to enter the Panton Hill vineyard - did he jump over me? I'm not quite sure; he gave chase as I was still coming down the hill towards the gate to the vineyard and winery one Saturday: we both saw the fox sitting like a dog with its back to us, big, thick, tail straight, in the middle of the track: it ran into blackberries to the right with Rex in pursuit; Rex then reversed - a funny sight - and came back to my car looking proud of himself. Through the gate and up the hill and you're there: beautiful Tuscan-like buildings made by Tuenis the winemaker, made from stone dug out of the ground on the property, and, a vineyard up against the bush to the left. Inside the great hall with a great table and a huge fireplace with enormous logs burning (in winter), Dorothy stands before a listening group who have filled up the gravel car park with their vehicles, and she has placed on an ancient table a wide selection of wines made mostly from grapes grown at the vineyard, including a most interesting sparkling wine which she and Tuenis can tell you all about. They listen attentively to her, glad to gain the knowledge, but a sip of each wine has already sold them. This vineyard is a "hidden gem" and I feel fortunate every time I take the short drive out of Melbourne to visit. About 45 minutes, people say, but I never notice: I like to drive there via Eltham and enjoy the views of the mountains from Kangaroo Ground. Lovely food, cheeses, full antipasto, and pizzas made on site. Teunis, the academic and wine maker and builder of the buildings, walks about the grounds where people sit taking in the weather with delight, and inside the hall with the big fire, and explains the wines, and the history of the grapes, and you wonder why you would ever go overseas when you have this winery. If I fly down to Melbourne, which I do, I include (as well as a trip to Wye River), the Panton Hill winery in my visit, and of course the North Fitzroy Arms where the great former Carlton premiership player Percy Jones will welcome you, Jimmy Watson's Wine Bar of course, Tiamo One and Tiamo Two, and il Caretto in Nicholson Street. They should all carry wine from Panton Hill Winery. JD

Hi John, Thanks for the lovely review, and thanks for taking the time to do it. It obviously wasn’t written in 5 minutes! Will look forward to having you visit next time you’re in Melbourne.Know and enjoy some of those other places you mentioned at the end of your review, but there are a couple we haven’t visited and will have to check out.

Just lovely
Dec 2018 • Friends
Panton Hill vineyard is a lovely drive north-east of the city. The area is very scenic. Their vinyard is lovely - as vinyards are - covering gentle slopes. The estate is gorgeous, very Tuscan in atmosphere, with a fountain playing in the courtyard, an outdoor eating area overlooking the vinyard and lovely stone buildings. The tasting room is like an old European hall and the wine tasting is very interesting - each vinyard has their own focus wines and Panton Hill has a great range. Food is available too if you want to sit and soak up the atmosphere. Worth a trip.

Nov 2018 • Business
We had a group of 45 Kiwis visiting Panton Hill Vineyard & Winery. The place is just absolutely terrific, we could have spent the entire time there. The wine tasting was extremely well managed by Dorothy & her husband.

We will be back again next year!

Small hidden gem of a winery
Nov 2018 • Friends
This is the best experience i have had at a winery. It was personable, indepth knowledge and not rushed.

It is a small outside tasting area, but alot of various types of seating that fade away into the background or even have a picnic rug on the grass which overlooks the winery and rolling hills..

On the day we visited there was a choice of a 3 or 5 cheese board with pate, We enjoyed the cheese board with the bottle of Rose.

Cant recommend this place enough. Great hidden gem. When I come back to Australia, I will be back.

Lovely setting. Great wine tastings with the owner & beautiful wines. Enjoyed a delicious pizza sat outside in the sunfilled courtyard. It is a beautiful spot & I need to return with my credit card to purchase some wine. The platters looked delicious.

Thanks for your review. Glad you enjoyed visiting us. We made the decision a number of years ago to intentionally kept this business at a finite size as this place is our home as well as our livelihood. We want to keep our hands on what we offer to visitors and always want to provide a personal experience. We have limits in parking and kitchen size . That is why we recommend booking to larger groups wanting to eat. Wine is at the heart of our business and we always look forward to sharing our beautiful range with anyone who visits!
