After many years I visited the Mitre Tavern in the Melbourne CBD last week . This was one of the 1st pubs I had a legal drink in way back in the 70,s and I think that the same bar stool is still there , this is not to say that the venue is dated I think City workers have... More

Went on a Friday for happy hour and it was busy! Still didn't need to wait long for a pint and they even came around with a bit of popcorn for nibbles. Nice.

This old English styled pub is a nice way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is located in a laneway and you can enjoy a beer in piece surrounded by big city buildings. Eat inside or outside depending on the weather. We enjoyed a lovely cold beer and were warmly greeted by bar staff. Mountain Goat... More

Came here for a drink after playing a table of black jack at crown... Pleasantly surprised by how long we hung around. Predominantly business people but didn't feel out of place...everyone welcomed. The staff were pleasant and the beers were cold. Could even buy a cigar if one so desired

If you are a pub goer, this place is unmissable when visiting Melbourne. Everything a good old fashioned pub should be. The atmosphere is what sets it apart. The food was good and it had a good range of drinks but the after work atmosphere is what sets it apart.

The Mitre Tavern is a very old pub absolutely surrounded by the big buildings of Collins Street. You can sit outside and enjoy a meal and a beer in the quiet little lane that it lies within. It has that olde English feel about it and it is most relaxing. Once you have finished here take a stroll into Collins... More

Visited on a Tuesday night with no reservation. I was warmly welcomed and shown to a table near the kitchen area. Great location as excess light from the kitchen allowed me to read the menu easily! A pre dinner drink was promptly delivered with ice on the side - a nice gesture as I had ordered a scotch on the... More

Poor phone reception means the boss can not track you down on your business lunch (tee hee). But seriously this place is great. It is packed to the rafters most lunchtimes and overflowing, al-fresco style with shades and heaters to warm you whilst drinking your ice-cold beer.. The eatery is great with an excellent choice of mix and match, e.g.,... More

The atmosphere at this Pub is just great, it looks like a turn of the 20th century Pub, the meals are suburb and the service excellent. Loved the outside dining area it was full of people all enjoying a get together and good dining experience.

The Mitre is reputed to be the oldest building in Melbourne and that means something in this Australian city which oozes history and style. For a UK visitor entering the Mitre seems very familiar - reminiscent of an upmarket old English country pub. There is a large bar area and a bistro downstairs and the restaurant is located up a... Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
