Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

- Carmel MBrisbane, Australia10 contributionsMatty = exceptional customer relationsWe went to see Miss Saigon for our anniversary. My wife is in a wheelchair so we usually get seated at the back of the theatre as we were. We were greeted by Matty who then proceeded to arrange better seats for us. He made sure we were comfortable and kept checking on my wife. He went over and above to make sure we had a wonderful time. Matty is six star.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 7, 2023

- Kathleen R1 contributionFun filled outing.Enjoyed the way they manipulated some of the songs to accommodate scenes that could not be recreated from movie. A talented caste but particularly enjoyed Marcia Hinds role and how she brought her personal touch to part. Finishing show with a performance of several songs was the perfect ending. Would definitely recommend.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 30, 2023
- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia13,538 contributionsIt's easy to arrive at this glamorous theaterThis glamorous gold-and-crimson theatre is hosting "Chicago". The story is based an Chicago, America's "Second City." We spent time in Chicago, America's exhilarating conurbation of business and culture. "Chicago" features Australian stars, who bring their energy and their musical grist to this great show. Her Majesty's is in Melbourne's Theater District, it's easy to arrive. You can get a good seat for a moderate cost.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 10, 2024
- Samadhi Spa and... R1 contributionHospitality at its best!I would like to sincerely thank all the staff at Her Majesty’s Theatre today for their attentive care and remarkable hospitality. I brought my mother to see the musical Chicago. She is in a wheelchair and was a little anxious due to her limited physical capacity, but the staff immediately put her at ease and went over and above to assist her, and check in on her during the show. Hospitality and friendliness at its best!! We thoroughly enjoyed the performance and congratulations to the artists who were sensational !! - Davison7 contributionsWonderful venue with a small request*Overall the venue is easy to access, by far Melbourne's most comfortable, programming many popular musicals. One plead from our mother who is reliant on several special needs services : "Could the venue please tweak, invest and connect to a more reliable audio / wi-fi network?" The app-based receiver on phones provides overall clear audio but most unfortunately the live feed constantly crackles, cutting in and out every few minutes. Our entire group experienced this, tried different sets of earphones and had the same issue on multiple shows. It's an absolute gift that the listening service is offered it just needs some fine-tuning. On our last visit, we spoke to a somewhat officious young woman who told us "there's nothing wrong with it" and didn't wish to assist further or look into the disappointing issue.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 11, 2024

Her Majesty's Theatre is said to be Australia's finest lyric theatre. The theatre is luxuriously appainted in gold and crimson, with velvet seating. The theatre dates from 1886, when Melbourne was truly Marvelous. The interior was redone in the 1930s in Art Deco style. This classical theatre is reopening after the covid lockdown with the Disney musical, Frozen. Melbourne's East End Theatrical District is rivaled by only London and New York.

Went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This was our 1st visit to Australia so we wanted to do something we do in the states, and compare. The seats were very comfortable and I could not see any obstructed views. The ticket price and the snack prices were very reasonable. This theatre is centrally located and very easy to walk to. I would recommend this to any show lovers!

We enjoyed the show. But were disappointed that the content had been changed, to it's detriment. This is the sixth time we have seen it in London and once in New York over several decades. I felt the scene with many people trying to sing the Phantoms composition was unnecessary. And what happened to the.powerful scene where many are climbing down and singing and where the Phantom sings above the stage.
Disappointed.
ALL the cast were absolutely excellent, as was the orchestra.

My family recently took our children to see Beauty and the Beast- the show itself was wonderful!
The seating however, feels quite squished in comparison to other Melbourne theatres, possibly time for an update? There was absolutely no room to put coats at feet or even handbags and drinks.
Also, does no one have any theatre etiquette these days? We counted at least 20 people during the first half of the show going out to what we assume was to use the toilet, as they all then came back in again during the first half. This is disruptive and rude to both the audience and the performers!
I get that children can’t always hang on but judging by the age of some, maybe they were far too young to attend the theatre?
20 years ago, this would not have been allowed - same with the late comers. And there were plenty of them too!

Her Majesty's Theatre is in Melbourne's theatre district. This classic theatre has been in business since1886. Exhibition Street is easy to get to, it's in Melbourne's East End. At the moment "2:22 A Ghost Story" is playing. This thriller has won awards in London for is intriguing plot line. The sensational musical "Miss Saigon" will open in October and run until December 2023.

Saw Hamilton on a week night. After the doors closed, the show began. 2 patrons arrived late and sat next to my guest and I. They missed the setup and house rules instruction. One of them continuously used their phone (typing away, bright screen light, made very little attempt to cover the behaviour). His behaviour continued throughout the whole of first half before the intermission.
Not one single staff or usher stepped in. It made the experience really unpleasant. The musical was great but heavily impacted by poor staff and poor etiquette from some patrons.

One of Melbourne's favorite live theatres, Her Majesty's has been remodeled over the years to keep up-to-date with current trends. With the long run of the Broadway hit musical Hamilton coming to an end, the next major show will be a revival of the Disney family favorite, Mary Poppins. Her Majesty's has a long history as a stalwart of Melbourne's theatre district.

Watch Mary Poppins on our 7th day of arrival, 7pm Friday night show.
We bought a pair of tickets, stall 5, Y13 &14 @ $60 each, all way back on L1, online. Lousy view with a pillar right in front.
Show is fantastic! Cast is fantastic! Music is excellent!
Never watch any original movie by Julie Andrews, but I simply enjoy the show by this cast!

Are the side aisles - not the main left and right aisles but the extreme SIDE aisles wide enough to afford convenient access to the seats toward the end of each row?
I ask because the side aisles shown on the seating plans of some theatres (e.g. Hamer Hall) simply do not exist.

Hi I have tickets to see Hamilition next year my seats are in Row V seats 31 and 32. Ticketek says the seats are restricted by support poles. I was just wondering how restricted the view will be from there

Regarding seating -
Is Dress circle G26/27/28 good or F35-44 better? Just wanted to get some tickets for a Christmas present but never been to this theatre before. I've read that dress circle is the best place to sit but unsure. Thanks

No performances or shows listed on their website for July 2019? Will there be any shows to possibly come then? I have overseas guests arriving then and really wanted to take them to see a show at the MAJ.

Hi there,
You're right, we have no shows scheduled for a few weeks to allow us to do some long overdue maintenance to keep us in the best possible condition. We will also be bumping in the production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ready for opening in August. There are some great productions on in Melbourne at the moment so have a look at Marriner Theatre's website as well as The Arts Centre - you may find something that interests you.
You could always bring your guests for a coffee or lunch in our café, its open during business hours weekdays. Our theatrical caricatures are a great feature.
Kind regards
Mary @ HMT

Anyone offer advice where to sit for extra leg room?
Thanks in advance
Written March 21, 2019
Try Row E of the Dress Circle - it is right on the aisle and has a lot of space in front of it.
